Soldier dies as result of training accident

A Minnesota Army National Guard soldier died Sunday, Oct. 22, after being injured during a military training exercise at Fort McCoy, Wis., late Saturday night.

The soldier, Pfc. Michael David, 19, of Morristown, Minn., was accidentally shot during weapons qualification training. Medical personnel at the scene provided immediate care.

David was evacuated by helicopter to Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis., where he died late Sunday afternoon.

David was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 135th Infantry, based in Mankato, Minn. Approximately 650 soldiers from the battalion had been training at Fort McCoy Oct. 21-22.

The accident is currently under investigation by Army authorities.
