Severe Weather Procedures

In case of severe summer weather, members of the Fort McCoy community may be required to take shelter. At Fort McCoy, employees should know the procedures or plans to take shelter or evacuate their facilities. For more information, call the Installation Safety Office at (608) 388-3403.

If necessary, the tornado warning sirens at Fort McCoy will sound. A steady three-minute tone will sound at the onset of a weather warning. At the end of the warning, a 16-second wailing tone will sound and be followed by an eight-second wailing tone burst. Signals will be repeated as necessary.

The siren system will be activated for the following events:

- Sighting of a funnel cloud or tornado.
- Tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service.
- Hurricane force winds.
- Other disasters, which in the opinion of the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security Protective Services Division or the officer in charge, would require personnel to take immediate shelter (chemical spill, gas leak, force-protection incident, etc.)

Soldiers on ranges during inclement weather should seek shelter and remain in
contact with Range Operations.
