April 12-18 is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, when emergency dispatchers are recognized for their behind-the-scenes work.

The observance first was conceived by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County (Calif.) Sheriff's Office in 1981 and became officially recognized by the U.S. Congress in the 1990s.
