The attendance of more than 600 people at the winter annual event was nearly double the 2014 attendance, which was affected by below-zero temperatures.

The 2015 event, open to the public, brought people from the surrounding communities like Tomah and Sparta together with Fort McCoy to enjoy events from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

"The weather was great that day," said Nicholas Sanjari, Recreation Delivery Team manager for the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR). "It also was great to see all the people come out to enjoy the events."

Throughout the day many people participated in the slalom race, "big-air" competition, an obstacle course, a snow pile dig, carnival games, a snow angel-making contest, tubing races and a hot-dog eating contest, Sanjari said.

Several door prizes, also were given away, to include two $100 gift cards, a camera with accessories, two portable media players, and a 32-inch LED TV.

Reduced-price lift tickets, tubing passes and ski lessons were offered, and the ski and tubing conditions were excellent. "It looked like everyone was having fun and that's what is most important," Sanjari said.

DFMWR Marketing Director Jobi Spolum said the event helps to foster effective community partnerships with the local communities.

Event sponsors included La Crosse Radio Group, IHG Army Hotels, Dr. Pepper, Snapple Group, F&M Bank of Tomah, Swany, Super 8 of Sparta, Xcel Energy, Coalition Boardshop and the La Crosse Loggers. No federal endorsement implied.

"Without local and national corporate sponsors to help support and defray the cost of this event and many other DFMWR events, the events would be cost prohibitive," Spolum said.

Additional upcoming events at Whitetail include a pond hockey tournament Feb. 20, the Chili Taste-Off Feb. 21, a do-it-yourself cardboard sled event Feb. 27, and the end-of-season party March 1. For more information about the Whitetail Ridge Ski Area, call 608-388-3517/4498.
