Military Spouse Leadership Course starts Feb. 23; register by Feb. 13

Army Community Service, located in building 2111, holds the Military Spouse Leadership Course Feb. 23-25 and March 2-4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The six-day course is designed to empower military spouses with knowledge and skills needed to enhance military readiness and help maintain resilience. Register for the course by Friday, Feb. 13.

ACS events are open to military members, retirees, civilian workforce, Family members and registered Fort McCoy volunteers. Employees must contact their supervisors regarding dismissal from work centers. Call 608-388-3505 for more information or to register.


Scholarships for Military Children applications due Feb. 13

Applications for the Scholarships for Military Children Program must be turned in to a commissary by close of business Friday, Feb. 13. The scholarship program awards at least $2,000 at each commissary.

Applications are available in commissaries worldwide, including the Fort McCoy Commissary, and online at To apply for a scholarship, the student must be a dependent, unmarried child, younger than 21 (or 23, enrolled as a full-time student at a college or university) of an active-duty service member, Reservist, Guardsman, military retiree or survivor of a military member who died while on active duty or survivor of a retiree.

Archery Shiver Shoot set for Feb. 21

Fort McCoy's Sportsman's Range will hold a Shiver Shoot Saturday, Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is open to the public. The event will include 20 archery targets to shoot and prizes will be awarded to the overall winner. The entry fee is $10.

Chili Taste-Off event to be held Feb. 21 at Whitetail

A Chili Taste-Off will be held Saturday, Feb. 21 at Whitetail Ridge Ski Area. Activities begin at 1 p.m. The event is open to the public.

The Chili Taste-Off is from 1 to 2 p.m. (contestants must be registered by 12:30 p.m.) with award winners being announced at 2:15 p.m. Chili will be judged on color, aroma, consistency, and taste. Prizes will be awarded to the top two recipes.

Military Saves Week to be observed Feb. 23-28

Feb. 23 to 28 is Military Saves Week. People interested in learning more about the week should log onto, and take the pledge. By pledging, customers receive weekly updates including tips, tricks and ideas on how to save money, investment strategies and numerous tools and resources to assist with saving.

AAHM event set for Feb. 26 at McCoy's Community Club

The Fort McCoy observance of African-American History Month (AAHM)will be Thursday, Feb. 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in McCoy's Community Club. The presentation begins at noon.

Retired Brig. Gen. Alton G. Berry will serve as the guest speaker for the event. Berry has served as commander of the 86th Training Division at Fort McCoy, and more recently as the deputy commander for 88th Regional Support Command. The 2015 theme for AAHM is, "A Century of Black Life, History and Culture."

DIY Cardboard Sled event is Feb. 27 at Whitetail

A do-it-yourself cardboard sled event will be held Friday, Feb. 27 at Whitetail Ridge Ski Area. The event is open to the public.
Participants will build their own sled on site at 5:30 p.m. using provided cardboard and duct tape. All sleds then will compete in a race at 6 p.m. with a prize going to the fastest sled.

Automotive Skills Center now offering oil change service

The Automotive Skills Center is has added oil changes to their list of services. Authorized patrons may drop off their vehicle at the center, building 1763.

Appointments are available Thursdays from 1 to 8 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome also. Patrons must bring in their oil and filter, and the staff will do the service. The fee for the oil-and-filter change is $15.

As an added service, the staff will drive the patron back to their location on Fort McCoy while the service is being performed.

Whitetail end-of-season party set for March 14

Fort McCoy's Whitetail Ridge Ski Area will hold an end-of-season party Saturday, March 14 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The ski area then will close for the season.

The event is open to the public. Activities will include games and prizes, and an award for the best costume and customer of the year.

Pair Up, Slim Down challenge begins March 9 at Rumpel

The Pair Up Slim Down nine-week challenge begins Monday, March 9 at the Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122.

Participating teams of two will have body fat calibrations taken at the beginning, mid-point and end of the challenge. The team with the highest percentage of body fat lost at the end of the challenge will win.

Each member of the winning team will receive a $50 Valley View Mall gift card. No federal endorsement implied. The free challenge is open to authorized fitness center patrons. For more information or to register, call 608-388-2290/3200.


AER vehicle repair loans, grants available

Based on need, Army Emergency Relief (AER) offers interest-free loans or grants for essential repairs necessary for the safe operation of a vehicle when qualified personnel do not have sufficient resources to repair the vehicle themselves.

Eligible participants in AER include Soldiers — active and retired — and their Family members when there is a valid need. For AER vehicle loans, applicants will need to provide a copy of their driver's license, registration, insurance and estimated cost of repairs.

March Madness challenge open to fitness center users

A March Madness online bracket challenge is open to all eligible Rumpel Fitness Center users. Register your bracket by March 18 at the website

Customers must either create an account or sign into an existing account to play. When the challenge begins, use the password "fortmccoy" to participate. The first-place winner will receive a prize. For more information call 608-388-3200.


March 20 art & wine event planned at Whitetail

"A Taste of Art & Wine" will be held Friday, March 20 at 6 p.m. at Fort McCoy's Whitetail Ridge Ski Area Chalet.

Admission is $10; wine, beer and hors d'oeuvres samples are included. The event is open to the public.

Local artists will exhibit a variety of work including paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, glasswork, etc. Music will be provided from 6 to 8 p.m.

Tickets are limited and can be purchased starting March 6 at the Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122; Whitetail Ridge Ski Area; McCoy's Community Club, building 1571; and Central Registration, building 1668.


Aqua antics fitness class set for March 25 at Rumpel

An aqua antics fitness class will be held Wednesday, March 25 at the Rumpel Fitness Center Pool, building 1122.

Authorized patrons can participate in the class beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The 45-minute class is all about having fun while exercising. Prizes will be given for the craziest swim cap and most-creative swim suit. For more information about the class or the fitness center, call 608-388-2290/3200.


Commissary Value Brand returns to store shelves

In response to growing patron demand for products comparable to the low-cost, private-label items sold in civilian stores, the Defense Commissary Agency is re-energizing an "old friend" known as Commissary Value Brand.

The renewed program offers consistent, quality, low-cost pricing on name-brand products equal to or better than private-label items in commercial stores. The Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO) Program is available for military spouses and Family members.

The program provides information on career exploration, education, training and licensing, employment readiness as well as career connections.
