Despite some bitter cold January temperatures, hundreds of people attended the event throughout the day to enjoy fun, food and games.

"There were about 200 skiers and tubers for the day with a total of about 350 people coming through the chalet and enjoying Winter Extravaganza," said Nicholas Sanjari, Recreation Delivery Team manager for the

Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR) who supported the event. "Although it was very cold and windy that day, it was an overall success."

The event was open to the public, which brought people from the surrounding communities like Tomah and Sparta together with Fort McCoy to enjoy the day's events.

According to Jobi Spolum, DFMWR Marketing Director, the event helps to foster effective community partnerships with the local communities.

Sanjari said they gave away more than $1,000 in prizes, and had "really good" participation in the slalom race, obstacle course, rail jam, and big air competition.

Other activities included a snow pile dig, carnival games, snow angel making contest, tubing races and a hot dog eating contest. Door prizes also were given throughout the day.

"We finished the day off with a hot dog eating competition, which was a really big hit," Sanjari said.

"There would have been more people there if the weather would have cooperated, but we received really good feedback from the people who were in attendance."

Skiers and tubers were also able to buy reduced-price lift tickets, tubing passes and ski lessons. Additionally, ski and tubing conditions were excellent, Sanjari said.

Event sponsors included Buffalo Wild Wings, CenturyLink, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, F&M Bank-Tomah, Kicks 106.3/Magic 105, Mathew's Inc./Sparta Archery, McDonald's, MC Sports, Shenanigans Entertainment Center, Swany, Super 8-Sparta, TCI Architects Engineers Contractor and Xcel Energy. No endorsement implied.

Without local and national corporate sponsors to help support and defray the cost of this event and many other DFMWR events, the events would be cost prohibitive, Spolum said.
