Building on success seen through one social media outlet, the Fort McCoy Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR) marketing effort is working on building a followership in another.

"Social media has been very successful for marketing Fort McCoy MWR," said Jobi Spolum, DFMWR Marketing Director.

"It's another way to provide exposure for the facilities and events. We are also able to get the word out instantly, so cancellations, updates and even military specials can be sent to the customers in a timely manner."

Since April 2010, Fort McCoy MWR has had a Facebook page. Now, more than 2,000 people "like" (follow) the page, and, because of that successs, they're looking to grow their presence on the outlet Twitter.

Twitter is a social media outlet where status postings are referred to as "Tweets."

According to company statistics, more than 500 million Tweets are sent every day by more than 230 million active users.
Each Tweet can be no longer than 140 characters.

According to, Twitter was born as a mobile service and was "designed to fit into the character limit of a text message" from a mobile phone.

"Brevity keeps Twitter fast-paced and relevant by encouraging people to Tweet in the moment and to focus on the essential idea they are trying to communicate," the website states.

The followership on the Fort McCoy MWR Twitter page is currently small, but their audience is growing every day.

"Social media, for us, is really just another way to send information to the MWR community," Spolum said.

Social media pages complement an already vigorous marketing effort by DFMWR that includes a weekly MWR newsletter available via direct message by email and on the Web at The post's community newspaper, The Real McCoy, also publicizes many MWR events in its print and online formats.

Typically, information shared on any of the social media platforms include news and event updates for people to attend or know about. To see Fort McCoy MWR on Twitter, a Twitter account is needed.
