Scholarships for Military Children application deadline Feb. 28

The application deadline for the 2014 Scholarships for Military Children program is Friday, Feb. 28.

Applications are available at local Commissaries, including the Fort McCoy Commissary, building 1537, and at the Scholarships for Military Children website at

It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that their application is received at a commissary by close of business, Feb. 28. Note that this is not a postmark deadline date. There will be no exceptions made to the deadline date.

The Fort McCoy Commissary will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 28. Faxed or emailed applications will not be accepted.
Scholarships are open to qualified dependents of U.S. military ID card holders to include active, Reserve, Guard and retired military personnel.

McCoy's open Feb. 2 for Super Bowl XLVIII broadcast

McCoy's Community Club, building 1571, will be open Sunday, Feb. 2 for Super Bowl XLVIII from 4 p.m. until the game ends.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Kickoff time is 5:30 p.m.

Resiliency During Crisis, Grief training set for Feb. 5

The Army Family Team Building program will present a "Resiliency During Crisis and Grief" class Wednesday, Feb. 5 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Army Community Service Center, building 2111.

Attendees will define resiliency during crisis and grief and explore the stages of the grieving process. They will also examine and determine appropriate coping strategies and identify resources within their personal, military, local and community environments.

Registration is required by Friday, Jan. 31 by calling 608-388-3505.

The workshop is open to military, retirees, civilian workforce, Family members and registered Fort McCoy volunteers.


Start date rescheduled; Volleyball league begins Feb. 5

The registration deadline and start date for Fort McCoy's volleyball league has been rescheduled.

The registration deadline is Jan. 31 and league play begins Wednesday, Feb. 5 at the Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122.

The league is free and open to all authorized fitness center patrons who are at least 16 years old. Patrons can sign up as individuals or teams.

The volleyball league will play Wednesdays at 5:15, 6:15 and 7:15 p.m.

Supervisor Academy class: Confronting difficult people

The February session of the Supervisor Academy will focus on confronting difficult people.

Participants can choose between classes offered Thursday, Feb. 6 at 8 a.m. or Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. at the Army Community Service (ACS) Center, building 2111.

Participants will learn basic rules of effective confrontation and practice through role play.

The Supervisor Academy is provided by ACS and the Fort McCoy Directorate of Human Resources.

It gives new and experienced military or civilian supervisors the opportunity to attend a 60- to 90-minute training session each month to learn new skills, improve existing skills and develop a supervisor's tool box.

Artists sought for Artist's Corner event at Fort McCoy

The Fort McCoy Morale, Welfare and Recreation program is seeking amateur artists in the Fort McCoy community to participate in the Artist's Corner event.

The event is tentatively scheduled for Friday, March 28, at Fort McCoy.

Artists can exhibit any medium of work — painting, sculpture, photos, glass, ceramics, metals, etc.

Artists must attend the exhibition to present their work. Artwork may not be sold during the event.

Sponsorship training set for Feb. 11 at ACS

Sponsorship training will be held Tuesday, Feb. 11 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Army Community Service (ACS) Center, building 2111.

Sponsorship is a commander's program that assists Soldiers, civilian employees and Families during the reassignment process, and improves unit or organizational cohesion and readiness.

Training topics include regulations and forms, program entitlements, types of sponsorship, sponsor responsibilities, commander responsibilities and e-sponsorship.

Units may schedule unit sponsorship training by completing the Training Request Form six weeks in advance.

The Real McCoy: Publication dates, deadlines for 2014

The Real McCoy is your community newspaper. The Public Affairs Office staff welcomes readership suggestions about future articles and photographs.

The Real McCoy is published on the second and fourth Fridays of each month, except for December.

Submissions are required the Wednesday of the week prior to publication unless impacted by a federal holiday.

Publication dates for the remainder of 2014, followed by deadlines in parenthesis, are:
