McCoy programs can help patrons keep resolutions

Whether your New Year's resolution is to get fit, reduce debt or do volunteer work, Fort McCoy has classes, programs and resources available to help installation personnel reach their goals.

Personnel looking to get fit or lose weight in 2014 can keep motivated by entering the Rumpel Fitness Center's Ticket to Fitness contest, which is underway.

Authorized patrons can receive their Ticket to Fitness punch card by signing up for the contest at the fitness center, building 1122. Cards will be punched for every workout completed at the fitness center, with an extra punch given for each fitness class attended or workout session with a personal trainer.

When 20 punches are received the tickets will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a $150 Valley View Mall gift card. Participants can enter multiple tickets for punches received until Feb. 27.

Julie Pressler, a personal trainer/class instructor at Rumpel, said making resolutions stick can be hard but making one change at a time and making monthly goals and writing them down can help.

"Fitness is very hard for a beginner and is very intimidating; the gym also can be intimidating," she said. "Try an activity you love, and get your Family involved. Think of them as your team. They can help keep you on track."

Being realistic about goals and not setting them too high is important, she said. "Make sure you don't deprive yourself. It is OK to treat yourself once in a while."

Pressler said even just 10 minutes of exercise a day is a good start. "A little goes a long way and soon it will be a habit."

Personal trainers also are available at Rumpel, for no charge, to help patrons with their fitness goals. "When we design a program we ask about goals, expectations and health-related issues," Pressler said.

For those wanting to get their finances on track Army Community Service (ACS) will provide a Positive Cash Flow Planning class Tuesday, Jan. 21 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the ACS Center, building 2111.

The class is designed to help participants develop and maintain a budget and get into the nuts and bolts of budgeting.

The class will delve into why so many people live and work paycheck-to-paycheck and will explore the myths versus facts on everyday financial-management decisions. Register by Jan. 20 by calling 608-388-3540/3505.

Kevin Herman, ACS Financial Readiness Program manager, said New Year's is a good time to begin making changes. "For changes and goals to be successful, set goals with small attainable steps."

If someone is going to change just one aspect of their finances in the new year, Herman suggests paying yourself first. "You'll never get ahead unless you discipline yourself to live within your means. Invest into your TSP (Thrift Saving Plan), IRA (Individual Retirement Accounts) or Roth IRA, and start early; compounded interest is a great thing."

Herman said people fail to keep their financial-management resolutions because of lack of motivation and failure to keep track of monthly income and expenses. "If you're not doing at least some bookkeeping on a regular basis, you don't have your pulse on your financial numbers. Being able to look at how much money came in and went out each month is crucial."

"Chances are you'll be able to find many ways to reduce unnecessary spending," Herman said. "In doing so, you may be able to fund your TSP, IRA or Roth without having to change your lifestyle very much. Your motivation will grow as you see your portfolio grow."

One-on-one financial counseling is also available through the ACS Financial Readiness Program along with financial classes and workshops throughout the year for authorized personnel. Janeen Folgers, ACS Volunteer Corps coordinator, said volunteering makes for a good resolution because it is unlike most resolutions, which require people to give something up or to live without or cut back on things they enjoy. "With volunteering, what you are giving up is your time, but you get so much back in return."

Folgers added, "Not only is it a great way to feel good and have fun, it also allows you to give back to the community and meet people with similar interests and goals."

Many volunteer opportunities are available, including the ski patrol at Whitetail Ridge, the woodshop, and ACS workshop volunteers, Folgers said.
