VA Medical Center to host
Heroes Run Oct. 11

TOMAH, Wis. (Veterans Affairs Medical Center Public Affairs Office) — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Tomah will recognize the service of the newest veterans — those who have served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom — at a Welcome Home Celebration Saturday, Oct. 11.

Veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) are invited to join other veterans and the community in the first "Heroes’ Freedom Run." The 5K run will be free to all runners.

A one-mile run/walk/roll also is planned and is free. The route will circle the main VA buildings.

Registration begins at 8 a.m., with the 5K cross-country run at 9 a.m. and the one-mile fun run/walk/roll will start at 10 a.m. The public is welcome to participate in all the events.

The event also will include the live music of "Wigglestick," "Annie B," and "Squarewave." Adaptive sports equipment will be on display.

Veterans attending who have served in Afghanistan and Iraq will have their names entered into a special drawing for two prizes donated especially for this event: an electric guitar from Dave’s Guitar in La Crosse (and six free lessons from Guitars for Vets), and a Nintendo Wii game.

The community is invited to help welcome these veterans home by joining the "Heroes’ Freedom Run" that morning. Wear your red, white and blue; and bring your flags and signs of welcome and line the 5K course to cheer servicemembers on as they participate in the run.

Runners are asked to register by Friday, Sept. 26 so appropriate plans can be made for the day to secure free T-shirts. Registrations will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 3, as space permits. When registering, runners should provide their name, address, phone number, how many will be attending (adults and children), and if they are a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) or Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq).

Registration can be done by one of these methods: Call: (608) 372-1727 (or for more information); E-Mail: Laura.Bishop@va.gov or by mail: Heroes’ Freedom Run c/o Voluntary Services (135) VA Medical Center 500 East Veterans St., Tomah, WI 54660.
