Marching cadets

A group of cadets with the Wisconsin Challenge Academy march near the academy complex June 15 at Fort McCoy. The cadets were in their last week of training before graduating, which took place June 17 in Necedah, Wis. The Challenge Academy, a Fort McCoy tenant organization, offers youth the opportunity to change the direction of their lives and develop the strength of character and life skills necessary to become successful, responsible citizens. The program begins with a 5 1/2-month residential phase, followed by a one-year, post-residential phase.

Letter donation

Lois (Schwanz) Munns of Rock Springs, Wis., presents Public Affairs Specialist Theresa Fitzgerald with a letter she received in 1944 from a Soldier who was stationed at then-Camp McCoy for use in the Fort McCoy History Center on June 13. In 1944, while in grade school, Munns' class sent small Valentine baskets to Soldiers/patients at the Camp McCoy Station Hospital.

The Soldier who received Munns' basket wrote back to her thanking her for the Valentine basket. Munns kept the letter she received from Pvt. Norman Grabensky. She said she didn't want to throw it away, so she brought it to Fort McCoy for historical archiving and use.
