Sportsman's Range sets busy spring schedule

Fort McCoy Sportsman's Range, operated by the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, opened for the 2016 season April 2.

The facility has several types of ranges available to patrons. Included are rifle ranges at 50, 100, and 200 meters. There also is a pistol range that extends to 50 meters, a combination trap-and-skeet shotgun range, and 3-D and elevated archery ranges.

Sportsman's Range is located off of Highway 21 across from Pine View Campground.

Sportsman's Range events are open to eligible range patrons. Contact the range at 608-388-9162 about eligibility or for more information.

Following are a few events planned at the range for the spring:

3-gun shoot April 16

Sportsman's Range has scheduled the first 2016 three-gun shoot for Saturday, April 16, at 9:50 a.m.

The competition consists of three courses on the pistol, shotgun, and rifle ranges in four divisions: open, tactical scoped, tactical irons, and heavy metal.

Scores are based on time and accuracy. A prize will be awarded to the top shooter in each division.

Firearms are available for rent at the range. Rented firearms must use ammunition purchased from Sportsman's Range. Suppressors and short-barreled rifles are not allowed.

Entry fees are $20 for members, $25 for nonmembers before the day of the event, and $30 for nonmembers the day of the event. Register at Sportsman's Range during regular business hours or from 9 to 9:45 a.m. the day of the event.

Additional three-gun shooting competitions are scheduled for May 21, June 18, July 16, Aug. 13, Sept. 16, and Oct. 15.

50-bird skeet shoot April 30

A 50-bird skeet shoot is planned for Saturday, April 30, at 11 a.m. at Sportsman's Range.

Participants will shoot two rounds of skeet. The shooter with the highest score will win a cash prize.

Shotgun rentals are available at the range. Rented firearms must use ammunition purchased at the range. Eye and ear protection also are available for purchase.

Registration is required by 10:45 a.m. April 30 at Sportsman's Range or online at https://webtrac.mwr.army.mil/webtrac/mccoyrectrac.html. The entry fee is $20.

50-bird skeet league starts May 2

A 50-bird skeet league will compete Mondays from May 2 to June 13. Semi-automatic, pump, or double-barrel 12-gauge (or smaller) guns are allowed.

Participants may shoot any time Monday during range hours. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top-three participants.

The entry fee is $20, plus a one-time birds fee of $40. Members receive a $5 discount. Registration is required by May 2.

2-man trap league begins May 5

A two-man trap league will compete Thursdays from May 5 to June 16. Semi-automatic, pump, or double barrel 12-gauge (or smaller) guns are allowed.

Participants may shoot any time during Thursday range hours. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top-three teams.

The entry fee is $40, plus a one-time birds fee of $80 per team. Members receive a $5 discount. Registration is required by May 5.

3-D archery league starts May 6

A 3-D archery league will compete Fridays from May 6 to June 17.

Participants may shoot in one of two classes. The hunter class allows a stabilizer length of 12 inches or less, no lens in the sight (peep sight is allowed), and arrows must be 23/64 inch or under. The open class has no restrictions on sights, stabilizers, or arrow diameters.

Participants will shoot at 14 target stations per week. Participants may shoot any time during Friday range hours. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three participants.

The entry fee is $20. Registration is required by May 6.
