Ammo specialist training

Students in the 89B Ammunition Specialist Course, taught by the 13th Battalion, 100th Regiment on Fort McCoy, prepare munitions on an installation demolition range in mid-January as part of a familiarization training on several types of ammunition.

By Army definition, ammunition specialists are responsible for the management of ordnance to include ammunition and explosives.

Ammunition specialists are tasked with receiving, storing and issuing conventional ammunition, guided missiles, large rockets, explosives and other ammunition and explosive-related items.

The 13th, 100th is aligned under the 3rd Brigade, 94th Division of the 80th Training Command, and has been at Fort McCoy since 1995.

Weather changes

Snow is cleared from a parking area on Fort McCoy's cantonment area in early January.

Several inches of snow and extreme cold blanketed the installation early in the month, and a mid-January thaw brought temperatures that exceeded 30 degrees.

No-school day fun

Children work on a project at the School-Age Center/Youth Center in early January on a day most schools were canceled because of extreme cold weather.

When schools close, the center opens for the entire day to provide care options for home-bound students.

Thank you military!

Two children sign a banner at Whitetail Ridge Ski Area during Military Appreciation Weekend in early January.

In addition to people leaving messages on banners, other Whitetail customers and ski patrol staff wore tags bearing the name of a fallen service member.

Whitetail is open every weekend during the winter months. For more information, call 608-388-3517.
