Winter Extravaganza Jan. 24 at Whitetail Ridge

The annual Winter Extravaganza at Fort McCoy's Whitetail Ridge Ski Area is Saturday, Jan. 24 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The event is open to the public.

The ski hill opens at noon, and the tubing hill at 12:30 p.m.

Activities include the Snow Adventure Race at 9 a.m., the snowboard rail jam at 1 p.m., snow-pile dig at 2 p.m., a slalom race at 2:30 p.m., and an obstacle course at 3:30 p.m. The four-phase Snow Adventure Race includes cross-country skiing followed by snowshoeing, tubing and running.

Participants can register the day of the event; the first 25 to register will receive a Winter Extravaganza T-shirt.

Prizes will be awarded. Special discounted pricing will be applied to tubing and lift tickets for the day.

'Countdown to the Super Bowl' at McCoy's Jan. 26-30

A 'Countdown to the Super Bowl' event will be held during lunch at McCoy's Community Club, building 1571.

The event will run Jan. 26 through Jan. 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Authorized patrons will have a chance to play trivia and other games to win prizes.

Martin Luther King Jr. observance set for Jan. 29

Fort McCoy's Martin Luther King Jr. observance is Thursday, Jan. 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at McCoy's Community Club, building 1571.

The keynote speaker presentation by Jonathan Overby, Ph.D., begins at noon. Overby is the executive producer and host of the Wisconsin Public Radio broadcast, "Higher Ground with Jonathan Overby."

Overby, an ethnomusicologist and lyric baritone, served as music director at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Campus Ministry, vice president of the Wisconsin Arts Board and executive producer and director of Wisconsin's Official Annual State Tribute honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — the oldest such ceremony in the nation.

Currently, Overby is a member of the doctoral faculty at Edgewood College in Madison with a five-year post-doctoral fellowship to advance his research on world music and related topics.

His research centers on "the examination of world sacred music and its potential for creating greater understanding of the 'other' as a means of reducing human hatred."

Snowshoe, cross-country ski tour set for Jan. 31

Fort McCoy's Whitetail Ridge Ski Area will hold a guided snowshoe and cross-country ski tour Saturday, Jan. 31 at 6 p.m., weather and snow conditions permitting. The event is $5 and open to the public. Staff will be on hand to demonstrate how to snowshoe and/or cross-country ski.

MFLCs available for service members, Families

Military Family life counselors (MFLCs) are available to help service members, spouses and children. MFLCs address issues such as deployment and reintegration, stress and anxiety, marriage and relationship, grief and loss, parenting, sibling or Family problems, and daily life stresses.

Valentine Card Workshop set for Jan. 31

Army Community Service will host a Family Valentine Card Workshop Saturday, Jan. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon in building 2161. Spend time together making Valentine's Day cards. A minimum of one adult and one child is required to register. All materials are supplied.

Register by Jan. 28 by calling 608-388-3505. The workshop is open to all military, retirees, civilian workforce, Family members and registered Fort McCoy volunteers.

 

BOSS Super Bowl party set for Feb. 1 at McCoy's

Fort McCoy's Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) Program is holding a Super Bowl XLIX party Sunday, Feb. 1 at McCoy's Community Club, building 1571. The free party is open to everyone.

The event starts at 3:30 p.m., two hours before kick-off.

Participants can enjoy live DJ music and play games and trivia. The party will continue until the conclusion of the game.

'From Combat to Home' class offered Feb. 5

The "From Combat to Home" class, set for Thursday, Feb. 5 from 9-10:30 a.m., is designed to prepare service members for the challenges faced as they transition from deployment.

The class covers the challenges and benefits of military life along with challenges of returning home. It also covers solutions for individuals, couples and children.

Whitetail Ridge Ski Area customer appreciation day Feb. 7

Fort McCoy's Whitetail Ridge Ski Area will hold a customer appreciation day Saturday, Feb. 7 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The event is open to the public.

Special rates include $10 tubing passes and $20 lift tickets. Activities will include games and prizes throughout the day.

Patrons are encouraged to dress up in nerd-themed attire.

Brake check workshop Feb. 12 at Automotive Skills Center

A brake check workshop open to all eligible Automotive Skills Center users will be held Thursday, Feb. 12 from 1:30 to 9 p.m. at building 1763.

This hands-on, do-it-yourself workshop allows patrons to check brakes for wear and, if needed, change brake pads and rotors (not supplied). They may also check brake fluid levels; brakes can be bled if necessary.

Attendees must provide their own brake pads, rotors and brake fluid (if necessary). Guidance, if needed, will be provided by the Automotive Skills staff.

No registration required. Regular fees will apply. Participation will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

All participants will receive six free MWR Car Wash tokens.

Pine View Campground to host pond hockey tournament Feb. 20

Fort McCoy's Pine View Campground will be the site of a 3-on-3 pond hockey tournament on Friday, Feb. 20 at 5 p.m. The free event is open to the public.

Participants must have their own safety equipment (helmets are required), skates and sticks. Prizes will be awarded to the overall team winner. For more information, call 608-388-3517/3200.

 

Chili Taste-Off Feb. 21 at Whitetail Ridge

A Chili Taste-Off will be held Saturday, Feb. 21 at Whitetail Ridge Ski Area. Activities begin at 1 p.m. The event is open to the public.

The Chili Taste-Off is from 1 to 2 p.m. (set up begins at 12:30 p.m.) with award winners being announced at 2:15 p.m. Chili will be judged on color, aroma, consistency, and taste. Prizes will be awarded to the top two recipes.

Archery Shiver Shoot Feb. 21 at Sportsman’s Range

Fort McCoy's Sportsman’s Range will hold a Shiver Shoot Saturday, Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is open to the public.

The event will include 20 archery targets to shoot and prizes will be awarded to the overall winner. The entry fee is $10. For more information, call 608-388-9162/3200.

 

DIY cardboard sled event at Whitetail Ridge Feb. 27

A do-it-yourself cardboard sled event will be held Friday, Feb. 27 at Whitetail Ridge Ski Area. The event is open to the public.
Participants will build their own sled on site using provided cardboard and duct tape. All sleds then will compete in a race with a prize going to the fastest sled.
