'True American Patriots'

Hari Jones (top), the assistant director and curator of the Washington, D.C.-based African American Civil War Freedom Foundation and Museum and retired Marine, speaks to a Fort McCoy audience (bottom) during the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Observance Jan. 16.

Jones' presentation "True American Patriots," provided insight on the roles African Americans played before, during and after the Civil War.

Jones said African Americans, working in league with the U.S. Constitution, helped to end slavery and gain their rights as citizens.

Jones explained how African-American abolitionists, such as William H. Day, John S. Rock and Martin R. Delany, among others, contributed to political and military efforts that supported the end of slavery.
