Martin Luther King Jr. Day event Jan. 16 at McCoy's

Fort McCoy will hold a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event Thursday, Jan. 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at McCoy's, building 1571.
Members of the Fort McCoy community are welcome to attend.

The keynote speaker presentation will begin at noon. Harold "Hari" Jones, the assistant director and curator of the Washington, D.C.-based African American Civil War Freedom Foundation and Museum. He is considered one of the country's foremost authorities on the role of African Americans in the Civil War, said Master Sgt. Matthew Fitzgibbons, Fort McCoy Equal Opportunity (EO) adviser.

Jones has written five historical works in his series, For Light and Liberty. Volume one, entitled "The Road to Emancipation," has been published.

Punch cards available for tubing at Whitetail Ridge

Tubing punch cards are available for Fort McCoy's Whitetail Ridge Ski Area.

Each card has 10 punches and is $80 for juniors (12 and under) and $130 for adults. The punch cards offer a $20 savings over buying tubing passes individually. Punch cards are available at the ski area and must be paid for in full at the time of purchase.

Cards must be presented and will be punched at the time of use.

Ballroom dancing lessons underway at building 905

Free ballroom beginners dance lessons are being offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at building 905 at Fort McCoy.

A six-week beginners course for waltz dance instruction is held Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and began Jan. 7 and ends Feb. 11.

A six-week beginners course for swing dance instruction is held Thursdays at 7 p.m. and began Jan. 9 and ends Feb. 13.

No experience is necessary. Members of the public are welcome to attend and can begin the courses in the second week.

Participants will be dancing to music during the first lesson. A Valentine's Day dance will be held Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. at building 905. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Instructors are Shawn and Jimi McConnell, who have 25 years of experience.

Supervisor Academy offers training on coaching, mentoring

The Supervisor Academy training topic for January will be "Supporting Others through Coaching and Mentoring." The training will be offered at the Army Community Service (ACS) Center, building 2111, Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m.

Participants will differentiate between the roles of coaches and mentors, assess their own strengths and challenges as a coach and as a mentor, and identify effective feedback techniques to enhance leadership roles.

The Supervisor Academy is provided by ACS and the Fort McCoy Directorate of Human Resources. It gives new and experienced supervisors the opportunity to attend a 60- to 90-minute training session each month to learn new skills, improve existing skills and develop a supervisor's tool box. The academy training also will present attendees with peer support and feedback. Register by Jan. 15 by calling 608-388-3505.

 

Resume writing guidance offered during workshop Jan. 23

A Resume Writing workshop will be held Thursday, Jan. 23 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Army Community Service Center, building 2111.

The workshop will give participants personalized, professional, up-to-date guidance on what to include and what to eliminate in a resume. The fun, interactive workshop also will teach participants what type of resume best fits their work history to effectively land an interview with a potential employer.

Topics will include understanding the parts of a resume, dumping resume content that does not get you the interview, deciding to use an objective or summary resume, selling your value to potential employers, and selecting the resume format best suited to your history.

Winter Extravaganza event set for Jan. 25 at Whitetail Ridge

Whitetail Ridge Ski Area's annual Winter Extravaganza event is set for Saturday, Jan. 25 with the ski/tubing hills opening at 10 a.m. The event is open to the public.

The event kicks off with a snow adventure race at 9 a.m. Registration is required by 8:30 a.m., with a $20 entry fee. Pre-registration will also be accepted via Webtrac at https://webtrac.mwr.army.mil/webtrac/mccoyrectrac.html or at the Pine View Campground office or Whitetail Ridge.

Other activities include a snow pile dig, carnival games, a slalom race, an obstacle course race, rail jam competition, snow angel making contest, a big air competition, tubing races and a hot dog eating contest. Door prizes will be given away throughout the day.

Specials will include $20 lift tickets, $10 tubing passes, and $20 ski lessons ($30 with equipment rental). Equipment rental is available on site. For more information, call 608-388-3517/4498.

 

Jan. 25, Feb. 1 Valentine's Day Cards workshops at Fort McCoy

Family Valentine's Day Card workshops will be available to Fort McCoy personnel Jan. 25 and Feb. 1 from 9 a.m. to noon at building 2161 (located across from the Army Community Service Center.)

All materials to make Valentine's Day cards will be supplied. A minimum of one adult and one child must register together to attend. The workshops are open to military, retirees, civilian workforce, Family members and registered Fort McCoy volunteers.

Personnel must register by Jan. 21 by calling 608-388-3505. Workshop sizes are limited.

 

DTS classes offered at Fort McCoy in January

Defense Travel System (DTS) classes will be held in January at Fort McCoy by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service Lead Defense Travel Administrator (DTA) at building 50, Distance Learning classroom 3.

DTS Temporary Duty (TDY) Documents class will be offered Jan. 15-16 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This two-day class explains how to create TDY authorizations and vouchers for active-duty, civilian, and Reserve travelers. Class topics are: DTS definitions, travel policy, navigating DTS, authorizations, and vouchers. Attendees will receive hands-on experience by creating authorizations and vouchers using the DTS Training Database. This class is designed for new and intermediate DTS users.

Registration is required by 3 p.m. Jan. 10.

The DTS Approval Process and Travel Policy class will be offered Jan. 29 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The class explains the steps to approve DTS documents. Completion of the DTS TDY Documents class is highly suggested prior to attending. This class is for

Reviewing or Approving Officials. Registration is required by 3 p.m. Jan. 24.

Pre-retirement, ACAP, TAP briefings at Fort McCoy Feb. 3-7

Pre-retirement, Army Career and Alumni Program (ACAP), and Transition Assistance Program (TAP) briefings will be held Feb. 3-7 at Fort McCoy.

Pre-retirement is Feb. 3 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at McCoy's Community Club, building 1571. The briefing will cover benefits and issues related to military retirement. The Veterans Affairs (VA) representative will be available in the afternoon for questions and one-on-one discussions.

The ACAP DD 2648 Form is mandatory for those who will be retiring or separating from the military. This form must be completed online at www.acap.army.mil prior to attending.

The VA briefings and Financial Management briefing is Feb. 4 from 7:30 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m. at building 50, room 100.
ACAP Transition Overview is Feb. 5 at 7:30 a.m.

TAP is Feb. 5 from 8:30 a.m. (approximately) to 5 p.m. and Feb. 5-6 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The briefing will include information about resume writing, interviewing skills, job access and other job-search issues.

The briefings are open to service members who will retire or separate within 12 months of the briefings.
