Styx

Spawned from a suburban Chicago basement in the early 1970s, Styx eventually would transform into the virtual arena- rock prototype by the late '70s and early '80s, due to a fondness for big rockers and soaring power ballads. Early on, Styx's music reflected such then-current progressive rockers as Emerson, Lake & Palmer and the Moody Blues, as evidenced by such releases as 1972's self-titled debut, 1973's Styx II, 1974's The Serpent Is Rising, and 1975's Man of Miracles.

While the albums (as well as non-stop touring) helped the group build a substantial following locally, Styx failed to break through to the mainstream, until a track originally from their second album, "Lady," started to get substantial airplay in late 1974 on the Chicago radio station WLS-FM. The song was soon issued as a single nationwide, and quickly shot to number six on the singles chart, as Styx II was certified gold.

Other chart-topping Styx singles include "Blue Collar Man," "Come Sail Away," "Too Much Time on My Hands," "Renegade," "Grand Illusion," "Fooling Yourself," "Crystal Ball," "Miss America" and many more.

38 Special

After more than three decades together, 38 Special continues to bring its signature blast of Southern Rock to more than 100 cities a year.

With sales in excess of 20 million, most associate the band with its arena-rock pop smashes, "Hold On Loosely," "Rockin' Into the Night," "Caught Up in You," "Fantasy Girl," "If I'd Been the One," "Back Where You Belong," "Chain Lightnin'," "Second Chance," and more — timeless hits that remain a staple at radio, immediately recognizable from the first opening chord, and paving the way to their present-day touring regimen.

Guitarist/vocalist Don Barnes, who handles most of the vocals, says it's all about maintaining that intensity in the group's live shows.

"We never wanted to be one of those bands that had maybe gotten a little soft or complacent over the years," Barnes said.

"We're a team, and it's always been kind of an unspoken rule that we don't slack up, we stack up. We go out there every night to win."

Grand Funk Railroad

Grand Funk Railroad is known for its hard rock sound, including the songs "We're an American Band," Some Kind of Wonderful," and "Loco-motion."
