Whitetail Ridge Ski Area to open Dec. 26, weather permitting

Fort McCoy’s Whitetail Ridge Ski Area will offer expanded Saturday hours and the winter favorites of downhill skiing, snowboarding and snowtubing when it opens for the 2012-13 season Wednesday, Dec. 26, weather permitting.

Holiday hours will be in effect from Dec. 26 through Tuesday, Jan. 1. Hours from Dec. 26-31 will be noon-8 p.m., and Jan. 1 from noon-6 p.m. The facility will be closed until normal hours resume Jan. 4. The facility is open to the general public.

Regular Friday hours will be 4:30-9 p.m. Saturday hours will begin at 10 a.m., two hours earlier than last year, and run to 9 p.m. Sunday hours are noon-6 p.m.

“We responded to customer requests seeking additional hours on Saturdays,” said Pam Budda, Outdoor Recreation manager. “This also will help spread out the customers over additional hours, hopefully ease some of the peak crowds at the facility and increase customer enjoyment.”

Skiers and snowboarders will have access to slopes ranging from beginning levels to those with a vertical drop of more than 185 feet and up to 1,300 feet in length.

Snowtubers will have five 800-foot-long tubing lanes to enjoy.

Snow-making and grooming equipment keep the slopes in top shape. Customers can use tow or lift equipment to get up the slopes.

Cross-country skiing, snow shoeing and snowmobile trails also are available if natural snow conditions permit, Budda said.

Individual and Family season passes and cross-country and downhill skiing equipment rental season passes are available at a discounted rate through Dec. 23.

Customers using the facility can relax and warm themselves in the chalet, get snacks at a snack bar and rent equipment during facility operating hours. A warming area and bonfire pit at the bottom of the skiing/snowtubing slopes also are available.

“The National Ski Patrol will provide safety support for the facility,” Budda said. “Skiing and snowboarding lessons also will be available.”

Group lessons (up to 10 people) for snowboarders/skiers will be available Saturdays Jan. 12, 19, and 26 and Feb. 2, 9 and 16. Private lessons also are available on a one-on-one basis on a first-come, first-served basis during facility operating hours.

Budda said new this year will be improvements to the Tactics Field Paintball area and improved landscaping at the Ski Chalet.

Anyone using Whitetail Ridge also can find lodging opportunities at the nearby Pine View Campground, which is open year-round.
