A target date of Saturday, Dec. 19 has been set to open Fort McCoy’s
Whitetail Ridge Ski Area for the 2009-10 winter season. The actual
opening date will depend on weather conditions and how quickly the
Whitetail Ridge staff can make snow.
Snowmakers are used at Fort
McCoy’s Whitetail Ridge Ski Area to prepare the snowtubing
slopes for the winter season.
Whitetail Ridge is planning a special opening day party, which will
include special event and food prices.
Rental prices and available equipment will be approximately the same as
the 2008-2009 winter season. Customers can participate in skiing,
snowboarding and snowtubing activities. Cross-country ski trails and
snowmobiling also are available, if trail conditions permit. The
facility is open to the public.
“We just began making snow last week, with the warm weather we had for
much of November,” said Pam Budda, Fort McCoy Outdoor Recreation
manager. “We hope to get up to speed quickly and get a little help from
Mother Nature as well.”
The Whitetail Ridge 2009-10 winter season will run from about
mid-December 2009-March 2010, weather conditions permitting.
The facility will be open Fridays through Sundays. Skiing and Chalet
hours will be 4:30-9 p.m. Fridays, noon-9 p.m. Saturdays and noon-6 p.m.
Sundays. Snowtubing hours will be 5-8:30 p.m. Fridays, 12:30-8:30 p.m.
Saturdays and 12:30-5:30 p.m. Sundays.

The Whitetail Ridge Snack Bar will be open when the hill is open,
T-bar and rope-tow lifts are available. Season passes still are for sale
through Wednesday, Dec. 16. Passes are sold at the Pine View Recreation
Area Campgrounds office.
The 2009-10 season highlights at Whitetail Ridge include being hooked up
to the installation sewer system, which replaces the old septic system.
Several new sets of snowboards and boots will be available for rent.
Three new rails will be available for skiing and snowboarders, Budda
“We’ll still have the Fort McCoy National Ski Patrol members patrolling
the hill and offering safety support,” Budda said. “We will have skiing
and snowboarding lessons.”
Soldiers also can borrow a free warm coat to use for winter activities.
Whitetail Ridge is available to host parties. The Tactics Paintball
Course also is located near the Whitetail Ridge facilities.
