|Under the leadership of the Fort McCoy Installation
BOSS team, the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program
at Fort McCoy continues to generate new energy and establish itself as a
viable program for the population of Fort McCoy.
For many years BOSS has been largely absent on Fort McCoy, and, like
other installations it is due in part to a lack of understanding about
what the program is all about. BOSS is more than just a program for
single Soldiers. On Fort McCoy the BOSS program is open to Single
Soldiers, Single Department of the Army civilians, and geographical
bachelors of both groups.
The Fort McCoy BOSS program operates through funding provided by the
Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR) to provide
quality recreational and community opportunities that many single
members are not aware of or do not have the means to plan.

The program is based upon the three pillars of Quality of Life/Well
Being, Recreation and Leisure Activities, and Community Service.
With each monthly meeting the BOSS committee grows in membership, and
the energy generated for the program resulted in an annual calendar of
events for Fiscal Year 2010, with an ambitious activity schedule.
BOSS recently accomplished two community service events, including the
cleanup of a 2.5-mile stretch of State Highway 21 under the auspices of
the “Adopt the Highway” program of the Wisconsin Department of
Transportation. The other event was a Veterans Clothes Drive.
The veterans clothing drive asked for donations of winter clothes to
support the population of needy veterans in the area, and BOSS worked
with Veterans Affairs (VA) to distribute the clothing. Other events
included a DFMWR holiday shopping trip to the Mall of America Dec. 5,
with BOSS sponsoring the trip for eligible members, Santa’s Story Time
at the Child Development Center, a Big Buck Contest for the 2009
Gun-Deer Season on post, and a VA Hospital visit.
Events on the horizon are partnering with the Fitness Center Program
Team to establish an outdoor ice skating rink this winter, a Host a
Soldier for the Holidays program, a Tropical Theme Night at the Fitness
Center pool, a sky diving trip, a Block Party, a chartered fishing trip
and sponsoring the Patriot Warrior Riders.
BOSS holds monthly meetings every third Wednesday at building 100 in
conference room A, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Anyone may attend the planning
committee meetings even if they are not eligible to receive BOSS
