Whitetail Ridge Ski Area to open Dec. 26 for 2012-2013 season

Pam Budda, Fort McCoy Outdoor Recreation manager, said Fort McCoy crews began making snow Dec. 1 to augment Mother Nature’s work. The facility has a full schedule of activities planned.

“We’re bringing back the favorites from last year, snow tubing, snowboarding and downhill skiing,” Budda said. “Everything will be just the way people who were here last year remember it, so it should be easy for them to get back into the swing of things and enjoy the winter season at Fort McCoy.”

Whitetail Ridge will be open holiday hours from Dec. 26-Jan. 1. The hours will be noon-8 p.m. Dec. 26-Dec. 31 and noon-6 p.m. Jan. 1. After the holidays, the regular hours for Whitetail Ridge and the Ski Chalet will be Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through about mid-March, weather permitting. Budda said the hours will be 4:30-9 p.m. Fridays; noon-9 p.m. Saturdays; and noon-6 p.m. Sundays.

Fees to rent equipment or use the lifts or tows are unchanged. Individual/Family season passes and cross-country and downhill ski-equipment rental season passes are available at a discount until Dec. 23 and are available to the public.

Skiers and snowboarders will have access to slopes ranging from beginner levels to slopes with a vertical drop of more than 185 feet and 1,300 feet in length. Snow tubers will have five 800-foot long lanes at their disposal, and skiers and snowboarders will have access to a terrain park.

“We also will have the National Ski Patrol personnel on duty during the operating hours to ensure everyone uses the facilities safely,” Budda said. “For those interested in learning to ski or snowboard, we will offer lessons.”

Guests can use the Ski Chalet to keep warm or view the action through large windows.

A bonfire at the bottom of the ski slopes and a warming hut at the bottom of the snow tubing lanes also are available to keep patrons warm. The Ski Chalet offers a variety of indoor activities, equipment rental and a snack area where food and beverages are sold.

Facilities for Laser Tag and Tactics Paintball also are located at Whitetail Ridge. Lodging is available year-round at the nearby Pine View Campground.
