Flu immunization clinics

VITA volunteers can take online training  [ back to top ]

People in the Fort McCoy community interested in training to be Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) preparers during the upcoming tax-preparation season are encouraged to contact the installation VITA Site coordinator by Wednesday, Dec. 15.

The training is a great opportunity to get experience in preparing both federal and state income tax returns to assist military members of the Fort McCoy Community.

VITA Coordinator Rita Byers, who has been involved with the Fort McCoy Military VITA program for a number of years, said this year’s training for Fort McCoy volunteers will be available online — the Internal Revenue Service is the preferred method — and if needed, on site too, with the VITA Center opening projected for the first week of February.

The online training will be offered at the Internal Revenue Service Web site http://www.irs.gov. This site also provides answers for federal income tax-related questions for everyone.

DTA offers travel classes in December  [ back to top ]

Classes will be offered by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service Lead Defense Travel Administrator (DTA) at Fort McCoy in December at the Army Reserve Readiness Training Center, building 50.

The class schedule is:

Dec.6 –CancellationProcedures,9–11 a.m.; Itinerary Adjustments, noon–2p.m.
Dec. 8 and 9 – Defense Travel System (DTS) Temporary Duty Documents, 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Dec.13–DTSBasics,8–11a.m.; ConstructedTravel,noon-2p.m.
Dec. 21 – Approval Processes, 8 - 11 a.m.; Travel Policy, noon – 2 p.m.

Classes are open to military and Department of Defense civilian personnel.

Registration is required no later than five days before the class start date. Class sizes are limited.

No texting while driving law to go into effect Dec. 1  [ back to top ]

Effective, Wednesday, Dec. 1, a no-texting while driving law will go into effect in the state of Wisconsin.

As a federal installation, Fort McCoy already enforces a no-texting while driving law, said Sgt. Domenic Modica, Fort McCoy traffic sergeant.

Christmas Tree Lighting Dec. 2 at McCoy’s    [ back to top ]

Fort McCoy’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony will take place Thursday, Dec. 2 from 4 – 6 p.m. at McCoy’s, building 1571.

The event will include entertainment by the Fort McCoy Child, Youth and School Services, pictures with Santa, Santa’s Gift Shop, kids’ crafts and activities, and free cookies, hot chocolate and coffee.

The event is open to the public.

Army Family Team Building Interpersonal Skills Training set  [ back to top ]

Army Family Team Building Interpersonal Skills training will be held Tuesday, Dec. 7 from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Army Community Service (ACS), 2111 South 8th Avenue.

Topics will include communication, enhancing personal relationships, exploring personality traits, personal conflict management and acknowledging change.

Army Family Readiness Group training set for Dec. 9    [ back to top ]

Army Family Readiness Group (FRG) Operations training will be offered Thursday, Dec. 9 from 8 – 10 a.m. at Army Community Service (ACS), building 2111.

Participants will learn how to properly start and sustain a successful FRG. The in-depth training will cover the Army’s Policy(s) on the operation of, or being a part of, an FRG. The course serves as a way for a new commander or Family members to get started and also can as serve a refresher class.

Commissary Scholarship applications available in December   [ back to top ]

The 2011 Scholarships for Military Children program applications will be available beginning in mid-December at local Commissaries and at the Scholarships for Military Children website at http://www.militaryscholar.org.

Dependent, unmarried children younger than 23 of active duty, reserve, guard and retired military personnel, or survivors of servicemembers who died while on active duty or survivors of individuals who died while receiving retired pay from the military, may apply for a scholarship.

Applicants should ensure that they, as well as their sponsor, currently are enrolled in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) database and that they have a current dependent military ID card. The DEERS database will be the primary method of verifying eligibility.

Applicants must be enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time undergraduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college or university in the fall term of 2011. Applicants who have earned an undergraduate degree or who are enrolled in a graduate degree program are not eligible.

Applications must be hand-carried or mailed to the applicant’s local commissary. Applications may not be e-mailed or faxed.

FEHB program open season continues through Dec. 13   [ back to top ]

The 2010 Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Open Season is under way and will continue through Monday, Dec. 13.
FEHB enrollment or changes must be made online at the Army Benefits Center-Civilian (ABC-C) website at https://www.abc.army.mil.

Personnel also can speak to a counselor by calling ABC-C at 877-276-9287.

At Fort McCoy, personnel with FEHB questions or concerns can contact the Fort McCoy Civilian Personnel Advisory Center at 608-388-2722.

A limited number of brochures about FEHB programs are available in building 2187.

Information about health, dental and vision programs can be viewed at the Office of Personnel Management website at http://www.opm.gov/insure.


Holiday clothing, toy, food drive under way through Dec. 17  [ back to top ]
A clothing, toy and food drive is under way at Fort McCoy and will continue until Dec. 17.

Donations can include clothing for adults and children, new or gently used toys and non-perishable food items. All donated items will go to the Family and Children’s Center, the Fort McCoy Veterans Assistance Program and local food-shelf programs.

Drop-off locations are: Regional Training Center-Central, building 649; 88th Regional Support Command (RSC), building 60; Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122, and the Community Activity Center, building 2000.

The drive is sponsored by the 88th RSC, Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers and the Association of the United States Army.


IRS not mailing out income tax booklets for taxpayers  [ back to top ]
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that individual and business taxpayers no longer will receive paper income tax packages in the mail from the IRS.

These tax packages contained the forms, schedules and instructions for filing a paper income tax return.

The IRS is taking this step because of the continued growth in electronic filing and the availability of free options to taxpayers, as well as to help reduce costs.

Forms and instructions can be downloaded online at the website http://www.irs.gov/app/picklist/list/formsInstructions.html.

Patrons also can visit an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center at participating libraries and U.S. Post Offices or federal buildings. For a list, visit the website http://www.irs.gov/localcontacts/index.html.
