Gun-deer hunt begins

Hunters, including this youth who bagged a six-point buck at Fort McCoy, harvested a total of 312 deer (207 Nov. 19) during the installation’s opening weekend Nov. 19-20, according to the Fort McCoy Wildlife Program. The total included 122 antlered and 190 antlerless deer. Hunters still had a week after the opening weekend to get a deer. Fort McCoy also has muzzle loader and archery deer hunting seasons. USA Staffing briefings to be held Nov. 29-30   [ back to top ]
Briefings about USA Staffing, the new Department of Defense hiring process and tool for recruitment, will be presented Tuesday, Nov. 29 and Wednesday, Nov. 30 at building 905 at Fort McCoy.

The Civilian Personnel Advisory Center at Fort McCoy will provide briefings at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. both days. The briefings are open to federal civilian employees. Attendees can attend the briefing that best fits their schedule.

Attendance is voluntary, but all federal civilian employees are highly encouraged to attend to learn about the new system.

 

Health benefits open season continues through Dec.12 [ back to top ]

The Federal Employee Health Benefits (FEHB) Open Season is under way and continues until Dec. 12.

Open Season allows federal employees to ensure they have the right health, dental or vision insurance coverage for themselves and their Families. It is also time to consider the money that can be saved on out-of-pocket medical and dependent care expenses for 2012.

FEHB enrollment or changes must be made online at the Army Benefits Center-Civilian (ABC-C) website at https://www.abc.army.mil.

Personnel also can speak to a counselor by calling ABC-C at 877-276-9287.

At Fort McCoy, personnel with FEHB questions or concerns can contact the Fort McCoy Civilian Personnel Advisory Center at 608-388-2722.

Lunch & Learn classes offered at South Post Community Center [ back to top ]

The Army Family Team Building program offers Brown Bag Lunch & Learn classes at the South Post Community Center, building 6158. The classes are held Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

The next classes are Meeting Management Nov. 30, Delegation Skills for Leaders Dec. 7, and Coaching and Mentoring Dec. 14.
Register no later than the Friday prior to each class by calling Army Community Service at 608-388-3505. Attendees must provide their own lunch.

 

Fitness Center to have new hours Dec. 1 [ back to top ]
The Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122 will have new hours beginning Thursday, Dec 1.

Hours will be: Monday-Thursday 5 a.m.-8 p.m.; pool 6-8 a.m. and 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
Friday 5 a.m.-7 p.m.; pool 6-8 a.m. and 11 a.m.-6:30 p.m.
Saturday-Sunday 6 a.m.-2 p.m.; pool 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

The fitness center will be closed on holidays.

Christmas Tree Lighting set for Dec. 1 at McCoy’s  [ back to top ]
Fort McCoy’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony will be held Thursday, Dec. 1 at 4:30 p.m. at McCoy’s, building 1571. The event is free and open to the public.

The event will include Christmas Carols sung by Fort McCoy Child, Youth and School Services children, free cookies, hot chocolate and coffee, Santa’s Gift Shop, activities and crafts for kids and pictures with Santa. A door- prize drawing also will be held.

Commissary Scholarship applications open Dec. 1  [ back to top ]

Applications for the 2012 Scholarships for Military Children program will be available Dec. 1 at local Commissaries and at the Scholarships for Military Children website at http://www.militaryscholar.org.

Dependent, unmarried children younger than 23 of active-duty, reserve, guard and retired military personnel, or survivors of servicemembers who died while on active duty or who died while receiving retired pay from the military, may apply.

Applicants must be enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time accredited undergraduate degree program in the fall term of 2012.

Register by Dec. 7 for Newcomer’s Orientation  [ back to top ]
The next Fort McCoy Newcomer’s Orientation is Wednesday, Dec. 14 from 8:15 a.m.-12:45 p.m. at the Army Community Service Center, building 2111.

The orientation is open to all new installation personnel and their spouses.

Newcomer’s Orientation provides briefings by representatives from various installation activities regarding offered services and includes a tour of the installation. Child care for children of authorized personnel may be provided on a space-available basis; a one-week advance notice is required.

Cookie bake off set for Dec. 8 at the CAC [ back to top ]

A cookie bake off will be held Thursday, Dec. 8 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Community Activity Center (CAC), building 2000.
Participants must bring to the CAC a minimum of 24 cookies by 10:30 a.m. Dec. 8.

Prizes will be awarded for the top three cookie recipes. The registration deadline is Dec. 5.

Personnel without cookie entries also can participate in the event. A $1 fee allows anyone in the Fort McCoy community to sample and vote for their favorite cookie. Recipe cards also will be available.

Winter Wonderland Treadmill Race set for Dec. 15 at Rumpel   [ back to top ]

A Winter Wonderland Treadmill Race will be held Thursday, Dec. 15 at the Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122. Runners can participate throughout the day from 5 a.m.-8 p.m.

Participants will run three miles on a treadmill and have their completion time recorded. Prizes will be awarded to the top two male and female finishers.

The entry fee is $10. The first 25 registered participants will receive a custom T-shirt. Registration forms are available at the fitness center.

Participants may register throughout the day of the event, although pre-registration is encouraged.

The Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program also will be accepting non-perishable food items throughout the day.

Whitetail Ridge opens for season Dec. 26, weather permitting  [ back to top ]
Fort McCoy’s Whitetail Ridge Ski Area is scheduled to open for the season Saturday, Dec. 26 from noon-9 p.m., weather permitting. Whitetail Ridge is open to the public.

Individual/Family season passes, and cross-country and downhill ski equipment rental season passes are available at a discount until Dec. 23 and are available to the public.

Whitetail Ridge offers downhill skiing, snowboarding, snowtubing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

RSO announces holiday worship schedule  [ back to top ]
The Religious Support Office at Fort McCoy has announced its holiday worship schedule. A Christmas service will be held Sunday, Dec. 25 and a New Year’s Day service will be held Sunday, Jan. 1.

Protestant and Roman Catholic services are held from 9:30-10:30 a.m.

The Protestant Chapel is building 2672, and the Roman Catholic Chapel is building 1759. Both chapels are on South F Street at Fort McCoy.For more information, call 608-388-3528.

 

Group reservations accepted at Fort McCoy’s Sportsman’s Range  [ back to top ]
Fort McCoy’s Sportsman’s Range is closed for the season, but group reservations are accepted during closed hours of operation.
The range fee for a group reservation at Sportsman’s Range is $100 plus daily range fee (memberships honored) for a maximum of three hours.

The range is open to military, retired military, U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) appropriated fund and non-appropriated fund employees, retired civilian employees, DoD contractor employees working full-time at Fort McCoy identified through Department of the Army civilian identification cards and their immediate Family members and guests.

Rear Detachment Commander, Family Readiness Group training Dec. 5-6  [ back to top ]
Rear Detachment Commander and Family Readiness Group training will be held Monday, Dec. 5-Tuesday, Dec. 6 at the Army Community Service (ACS) Center, building 2111.

Training will be from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. both days.

Class topics will include an ACS Overview, Volunteer Management, The Roles and Responsibilities of the Rear Detachment Commander and Family Readiness Group Leader, Army Family Team Building, Working with Families, Overview of AR 608-1 Appendix J “Family Readiness Group Operations”, TRICARE, Legal Overview, Building a Resource Library, Working with a Family Support Network, and Real Life Scenarios.

Registration is requested by Dec. 1.

The Dec. 9 issue of The Real McCoy will be the last issue in 2011. The deadline for submissions is Nov. 30.

The Real McCoy is published on the second and fourth Friday of each month, except for December. Submissions are required the Wednesday of the week prior to publication, unless otherwise noted.

To submit items for consideration in The Real McCoy, call the Fort McCoy Public Affairs Office (PAO) prior to submission. All submissions must include the name of the writer and/or photographer and complete contact information.

PAO staff reserve the right to verify the clearance of stories/photos, determine suitability for publication and to edit material to match the Associated Press Stylebook newspaper style, etc.
