Michael Riordan (center) on a job well done for using his combat life-saving training after a vehicle accident during a Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Event in Denver in August. Riordan’s wife, Sonya, also was at the ceremony.

Riordan, a truck driver and mechanic with the 445th Transportation Company from Waterloo, Iowa, acted as a first responder when he witnessed a motorcycle accident. Riordan was standing on a corner waiting to cross the street with his wife Sonya Riordan when the driver of the motorcycle hit a curb while turning. The driver and passenger were both thrown from the motorcycle.

Riordan said he used his Army training as a combat life-saver to determine that the female passenger was injured worse than the driver and administered first aid to her. She complained of back pain. Riordan made sure she remained still and kept her calm until paramedics arrived in an ambulance.

Mrs. Riordan kept the driver calm.

The Riordans were in Denver attending a Yellow Ribbon Reintegration event with the 88th Regional Support Command from Fort McCoy. He returned from deployment in Iraq at Camp Liberty in May.
