Swimming pool area upgrades begin Oct. 1

The indoor swimming pool area at the Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122, will undergo renovations.

The pool, steam room, sauna, whirlpool, atrium, and outdoor deck will be closed during the approximately six months of renovation work, which is expected to begin Oct. 1, said Jeff Utesch, Rumpel Fitness Center manger.

Renovations to the pool include installing a new pool liner and removing the water slide, Utesch said. “The pool slide is being removed because it had structural problems, broken steps, supports that were coming loose, and rusting due to the warm, humid environment.”

The pool’s heating system also will be replaced with a new heater that will help control the humidity in the pool area.
Windows in the atrium also will be replaced with energy-efficient opaque panels, he said.

Other upgrades include replacing plumbing pipes, installing new hot tub piping and supports, and retiling the steam room.

The $983,000 contract was awarded to TCI Architects/Engineers/Contractor of La Crosse, Wis., said Dan Hanson, Directorate of Public Works project manager.

During the renovations additional fitness classes will be offered in lieu of the aquatics classes, Utesch said. A class schedule is available at the website www.mccoymwr.com.
