Hispanic Heritage Month observance Oct. 1 at McCoy's   [ back to top
Fort McCoy will hold a Hispanic Heritage Month observance from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1 at McCoy’s, building 1571.

The guest speakers for the event are: Raquel Paraíso, Enrique Rueda, and Francisco López. Together they form the group Cuicani.

The members of Cuicani are deeply committed to their Latin American heritage and to promoting an awareness of Latin American people and cultures through their music and presentations. The trio has been performing throughout Wisconsin since 1987.

Cuicani’s repertoire brings a breath of the Andean repertoires. The three members of Cuicani play a variety of instruments.

Paraíso (from Spain) is trained as a classical musician, and plays siku, mandolin, violin, and percussion.

Rueda (from Colombia) is both a talented musician and a sound sculpture artist. He plays quena, quenacho, and percussion.

López (from Mexico), the founding member of the group, plays guitar, charango, and siku.

The Fort McCoy Excellence Through Diversity Award also will be presented during the observance.

Military SportBike rider course set for Sept. 30, Oct. 1 at Fort McCoy   [ back to top ]

Soldiers in the Fort McCoy community who want more experience riding their sport motorcycles are encouraged to take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Military SportBike Rider Course, which will be held at Fort McCoy Wednesday, Sept. 30 and Thursday, Oct. 1.

Each class will be free, run from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and will accommodate up to 12 Department of Defense (DoD) personnel. Military personnel will have preference, and DoD civilians can attend as space permits.

Randy Eddy, Fort McCoy Installation Safety Office safety manager, said the course is the next-level training course for SportBike riders who have completed the MSF Basic Rider Course. Motorcycle riders who want to improve their skills also can take the MSF Experienced Riders Course.

The eight-hour MSF SportBike Rider Course is comprised of three hours of classroom training and five hours of hands-on field exercises.

Personnel interested in taking this new course in the Fort McCoy community must call Ride Safe, Inc. (Wendy Mlsna) at 715-299-7728 to register. The classroom portion of the training will be held in building 1721, S. 10th Ave., with the field portion in parking lot 17A, which is nearby.

Riders attending the SportBike course must have a SportBike-type motorcycle with insurance card. They can use their own motorbikes or must have written permission to ride someone else’s bike. Riders will need to bring along a motorcycle endorsement, long-sleeve shirt or jacket, boots or shoes (that cover the ankles), long pants, full-fingered gloves, eye protection (sun glasses or prescription or safety glasses) and helmets.

 

Texas Hold 'Em League to be held at Recreation Center  [ back to top ]

A Texas Hold ’Em League will be held at 6 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Oct. 1 at the Fort McCoy Recreation Center, building 2000.

The event is open to authorized patrons 18 and older, who include Soldiers, Department of Defense civilians, retirees and dependents. No entry fee is charged.

Individual tournament play will be featured, and each player will start with the same number of chips.

Players can choose to play whenever they wish. A new game is held each night. Prizes will be awarded for first place.

AFTB training session set for Oct. 6-8    [ back to top ]
Fort McCoy’s Army Community Service (ACS) will offer Army Family Team Building instructor training Tuesday, Oct. 6 through Thursday, Oct. 8.

Classes will be held from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 6-7, and from 8 a.m.-noon Oct. 8.

Topics include: The Adult Learner, Classroom Management, Speaking on Your Feet, Instructor Roles and Skills, and Group Dynamics.

Fall clean-up day to be held Wednesday, Oct. 7  [ back to top ]

The Fort McCoy Fall Clean-Up Day will be held Oct. 7.

Clean-Up Days are held the first Wednesday of October and the first Wednesday of May at Fort McCoy.

Personnel, installationwide, are encouraged to clean up their work areas as their regularly scheduled duties allow.

 

American Red Cross blood drive at ChalleNGe Academy Oct. 9 [ back to top ]
The Fort McCoy ChalleNGe Academy will host an American Red Cross blood drive in building 751 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9.

Anyone who is eligible to donate blood may participate in the drive.

CIF to close Oct. 26-30 to conduct semiannual inventory   [ back to top ]

The Fort McCoy Central Issue Facility (CIF), building 2142, will be closed Monday, Oct. 26 through Friday, Oct. 30. The purpose of the closure is to conduct a 100 percent semiannual inventory as mandated by Army regulations.

Laser Tag tournament set for Oct. 20 at Fort McCoy   [ back to top ]

A Laser Tag tournament will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20 at Fort McCoy.

The event will require a minimum of four teams, with a minimum of five people on each team.

No entry or rental fee will be charged, but participants must use Fort McCoy equipment.

Participants must be authorized personnel. Team prizes will be awarded and include free field and equipment rental at the Tactics Paintball and Laser Tag Field, free paddle boat/canoe rental and a free round of mini golf.

Registration is requested by close of business Monday, Oct. 19 at the Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122.

Soldiers mobilizing and demobilizing at Fort McCoy are eligible to make morale phone calls at the installation Community Activity Center, building 2000.

U.S. Cellular is sponsoring the program. No federal endorsement is implied.

Woodshop open Tuesdays, Thursdays for projects   [ back to top ]
The Fort McCoy Woodshop, building 1133, is open from 5-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Equipment available includes: table saw, band saw, drum sander, heavy duty wood lathe, scroll saw, combination sander, mortising machine, shaper, drill press, router table, router, oscillating spindle sanders (one-half and one horse power), dust collection system, reorganized shop project assembly and finishing rooms.

The cost to use the facility is $1 per hour. For more information, call 608-388-6588.

 

McCoy's fall Bowling League still has openings available    [ back to top ]
Openings still are available for the Fort McCoy Fall Bowling League, which is held at McCoy’s Bowling Center, building 1571.

Mixed leagues are held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Competition will begin in October.
