|Youth in the Fort McCoy community who will attend
school during the 2012-13 academic year got a head start to prepare for
classes by attending a back-to-school mixer on South Post Aug. 22.
Youth attending a back-to-school mixer at Fort McCoy’s South
Post Housing Area enjoy a game of basketball. The friendly
competition was one of several Aug. 22 activities that youth
could participate in to meet potential classmates.
Cori Yahnke, Fort McCoy Child, Youth & School (CYS) Services and
Youth Center director, said the goal of the event was to let the youth
and Families meet new friends and get excited about returning to school.
Some of the activities included making craft projects, playing tennis
and basketball and using playground equipment at Patriot Park. Families
then shared a potluck supper and had time to socialize.
“The youth and Families all had a great time reconnecting with old
friends and meeting new friends as well,” Yahnke said. “The Sparta
school superintendent attended, so Families in the installation
community who live in that district were able to meet and speak with him
Free school supplies donated by Operation Homefront also were available
to all at the event. No federal endorsement is implied.
