Mixer helps youth prepare for return to school

Youth in the Fort McCoy community who will attend school during the 2012-13 academic year got a head start to prepare for classes by attending a back-to-school mixer on South Post Aug. 22.

Cori Yahnke, Fort McCoy Child, Youth & School (CYS) Services and Youth Center director, said the goal of the event was to let the youth and Families meet new friends and get excited about returning to school.

Some of the activities included making craft projects, playing tennis and basketball and using playground equipment at Patriot Park. Families then shared a potluck supper and had time to socialize.

“The youth and Families all had a great time reconnecting with old friends and meeting new friends as well,” Yahnke said. “The Sparta school superintendent attended, so Families in the installation community who live in that district were able to meet and speak with him as well.”

Free school supplies donated by Operation Homefront also were available to all at the event. No federal endorsement is implied.

Yahnke said CYS Services After-School Program information was presented.

The After-School Program for eligible youth who will be entering grades kindergarten through 12 still has openings for the current academic year.

The program offers daily Boys & Girls Club and 4H Club activities after school as well as the opportunity to receive help with homework.

The regular hours are Monday through Friday 3-5:30 p.m. The program also accommodates youth on early release days, inclement-weather days and no-school days.

Youth who are in grades six and above do not pay a fee for regular after-school hours, but fees are charged for non-school days and special events.
