DFMWR board to hold informational meeting Sept. 9  [ back to top ]

The Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR) Customer Advisory Board will meet at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9 in the conference room of building 2187.

Representatives of all directorates and tenant organizations at Fort McCoy are welcomed and encouraged to attend. These informal meetings are held quarterly to collect customer information and to assess customer satisfaction regarding DFMWR programs and services.

Topics of discussion typically include "What’s New in DFMWR," "Facility Highlights" and "Customer Feedback," and more.

Protestant Women of Chapel to hold fall meeting Sept. 9   [ back to top ]

The Protestant Women of the Chapel group will hold a fall organizational meeting with fellowship luncheon Wednesday, Sept. 9 at the Chapel Center, building 2675, at Fort McCoy.

Chapel to host memorial service to mark anniversary of 9/11  [ back to top ]

The Fort McCoy Religious Support Office will hold a memorial service marking the eighth anniversary of the 9/11 terror attack at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11 in Chapel 1, building 2672, at Fort McCoy.

A deli lunch will be held in the Chapel Center, building 2675 (across the street from Chapel 1) immediately after the service.

Parking is available at Chapel 1 and the Chapel Center.

Retiree Appreciation Day to be held Sept. 11 at Fort McCoy   [ back to top ]

FORT McCOY, Wis. — Retirees from all branches of the armed forces and their family members are invited to attend a Retiree Appreciation Day at Fort McCoy, Friday, Sept. 11.

Sign in starts at 7 a.m. in building 905. The event will run from 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch is available at cost on the installation.

Retiree Appreciation Day is an opportunity for all armed forces retirees, spouses, widows and/or guests to receive updated information about retiree entitlement programs. Photo identification is required by all personnel entering Fort McCoy.

Fort McCoy Commemorative Area/History Center open Sept. 11  [ back to top ]

Fort McCoy’s Commemorative Area and History Center will be open to the public special hours Friday, Sept. 11.

The area will be open from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. in recognition of Patriot Day, Retiree Appreciation Day and the installation’s 100th anniversary.

This area of the post has been set aside to help preserve pieces of the installation’s history and to help tell Fort McCoy’s unique story.

The park-like setting includes:

  • Five World War II-era buildings filled with period furnishings and displays;

  • A History Center with recently redesigned exhibits and displays depicting Fort McCoy’s Century of Service to America from the installation’s founding in 1909 to the present day;

  • An Equipment Park with more than 50 pieces of equipment, including helicopters, howitzers, tanks, trucks and trailers; and

  • Veterans Memorial Plaza, the latest addition to the area, which features a space for personal reflection.

Public Affairs Office staff members will be on site to answer questions.

American Red Cross blood drive set for Sept. 17    [ back to top ]

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive Thursday, Sept. 17 at the Fort McCoy Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122.

Donations will be accepted between 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Firewood permits available Sept. 1  [ back to top ]

Starting on Sept. 1, permits will be available to collect firewood in specific training areas.

Two categories of permits are available. The calendar day permit for $10 allows cutting of firewood from designated areas for one day.

The calendar month permit for $50 allows cutting for an entire calendar month.

Firewood can be collected only in the designated areas when there is no military training in the area.

Firewood permits (including maps of collection sites) are available through the Directorate of Public Works Natural Resources Branch located in building 2168. Office hours are from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m..

Permit holders are limited to one vehicle, with or without a trailer that is smaller than a semi-tractor and trailer. Fort McCoy firewood permits are nontransferable and nonrefundable.

Monroe County recently has been included in the Wisconsin gypsy moth quarantine.

This means that firewood cannot be moved outside of the quarantine area. All counties east of Fort McCoy also are in the quarantine.

La Crosse, Vernon, Jackson, and other counties north, south and west of Fort McCoy are outside the quarantine area and cannot accept firewood from Fort McCoy. Please do not move firewood from Fort McCoy to these areas.

Small game, archery permits available  [ back to top ]

Hunters who want to get archery or small-game hunting permits for Fort McCoy are reminded they can submit their requests through the Automated License Issuance System (ALIS).

The Fort McCoy archery and small game seasons will be under way soon.

Hunters can apply for permits at any licensed Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources agent that has ALIS equipment.

Web site available to provide online tutoring to students  [ back to top ]

With September fast approaching, many youth in the Fort McCoy community will be heading back to school soon. A new link will provide children of military families and Army civilians with free 24/7 live homework help.

Army Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS) Headquarters and the Web site tutor.com have partnered to provide Army-affiliated children with help with English, social studies, mathematics and science. The service is available for youth in grades kindergarten through 12, college students and adult students.

Tutors are background checked and are certified teachers, college professors and graduate students.

The Web site to get signed up is at http://www.myarmyonesource.com/cyss_tutor. Service is available for eligible youth at the School Age and Youth Center facilities and at home. Youth can sign up for the service at CYSS or at home.

The service will be closed Thanksgiving (Nov. 26), Christmas (Dec. 25), Jan. 1, Easter and July 4. Funding for this partnership came from the Army Family Covenant program.

Commissary case-lot sale to be held Sept. 18-19   [ back to top ]

The Fort McCoy Commissary, building 1537, will hold a case-lot sale Friday, Sept. 18 and Saturday, Sept. 19 for authorized military patrons.

The sale will run from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. both days. Items can be viewed and paid for at the Commissary and picked up at the warehouse, building 2454. Items also will be on sale throughout the store.

Fort McCoy golf tournament set for Sept. 18 at Sparta  [ back to top ]

The Fort McCoy four-person golf tournament will be held Friday, Sept. 18 at the River Run Golf Course in Sparta.

A shotgun start is set for 11 a.m. A registration fee of $15 plus green and cart fees are charged. River Run members don’t pay green and cart fees.

Door prizes/awards and dinner are included in the cost.

Several major prizes include $10,000 for a hole-in-one or a chance to win two $500 airline travel vouchers.

Registration and payment must be made at the Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122, by Tuesday, Sept. 8.

CYSS accepting enrollment for after-school program  [ back to top ]

The Fort McCoy Child, Youth & School Services program is accepting enrollments in the afterschool program for the 2009-2010 school year, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Separate programs will be held for youths in grades kindergarten through fifth and grades 6 to 12.

Programs also will be available all day for nonschool days.

CYSS follows the schedules of the Sparta and Tomah Schools.

Pickup is available for the programs at designated schools and times.

Day for Kids set for Sept. 19 at building 905  [ back to top ]

The annual Fort McCoy Day for Kids will be held Saturday, Sept. 19 at the installation.

The event will run from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at 905 South 12th St. All activities will be free including lunch from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Army Community Service (ACS) and Fort McCoy Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS) will sponsor the event.

Activities will include: 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families; Kids Can Save; Cards to Soldiers; Tattoos; Family Photos; Internet Safety; Time Flies; Geo Trivia; Fire Safety; McCoy and Police Fingerprinting; Car Seat Safety Checks; and Kid Again Inflatable Fun. Mr. Steve, "the Master of Facilitator Fun," also will entertain the participants. Children attending the event must be accompanied by an adult.

Youth swimming lesson signup under way  [ back to top ]

Swimming lessons for authorized youth in the Fort McCoy community will be held Saturday mornings Oct. 3 through Nov. 21 at the Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122.

Parents are requested to contact the instructors to get their child into the appropriate skill level.

Military-eligible registration will begin Tuesday, Sept. 8, and registration for all other authorized patrons will begin Monday, Sept. 21.

Intramural basketball league forming  [ back to top ]

A fall intramural basketball league is forming at the Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122, with games scheduled to begin Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Games will run from 11 a.m.-noon and are open to military personnel and authorized patrons.

Registration is open Sept. 1-25. A captain’s meeting and draft will be held Tuesday, Sept. 29.
