Average attendance was 77 youth per day from kindergarten through 12th grade, said Cori Yahnke, School Age Center director. The program began when schools were dismissed in June and will conclude Tuesday.

Activities and events included visiting and using many of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation facilities at Fort McCoy, such as the Rumpel Fitness Center gymnasium and swimming pool, McCoy’s Bowling Center, the Pine View Campground beach and park, and taking a number of off-post field trips.

The sports clinics included participation and coaching in such sports as soccer, basketball and tennis. Youth also could interact with others in their age groups, Yahnke said.

A number of special days, such as drama presentations, movie theater visits, roller skating, 4-H and Boys and Girls Club activities, and a talent show helped keep youth interest high.

Academic opportunities were available in the computer lab and through volunteer tutoring to help youth retain and expand upon what they learned during the school year. Yahnke said parents who volunteered as tutors and for other support duties earned points to help reduce their program payments.

“We had a great summer program and will hold an end of summer bash to celebrate all the fun we had,” she said, adding that the after-school program will begin Sept. 1.
