ChalleNGe Academy to celebrate 10 years  [ back to top ]

The Wisconsin National Guard ChalleNGe Academy program, which operates out of Fort McCoy facilities, will celebrate its 10th year on the installation Wednesday, Aug. 27.

The program will host an open house in a tent behind building 639 from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m., with a ceremony at 11 a.m. Everyone in the Fort McCoy community is welcome to attend the event.

The ChalleNGe Academy, which provides academic and life-skills assistance to youth at risk of not graduating from high school, has graduated more than 1,600 cadets from its Fort McCoy program, according to Pete Blum, deputy director of the ChalleNGe Academy.

After-School Program for youth to begin Sept. 2   [ back to top ]

The Fort McCoy School Age Services After-School Program for youth in grades kindergarten through 12 will begin Tuesday, Sept. 2. A nonschool day program also is available.

Youth must be eligible to attend School Age Services programs.

Transportation will be provided from designated schools in Tomah and Sparta.

The program will offer homework help, 4-H and Boys and Girls Club activities, Morale, Welfare and Recreation events (swimming lessons, bowling, etc.) and more.

Youth in grades six to 12 pay no fees. Children in grades kindergarten through five pay the after-school rate.

Armed Forces Voting Week Aug. 31-Sept. 7  [ back to top ]

The U.S. Secretary of Defense has designated the week of Sunday, Aug. 31-Sunday, Sept. 7 as Armed Forces Voters Week. As part of the continuing efforts to provide voting assistance to Soldiers and their families, activities are planned Armywide and at local installations.

The general election will be Tuesday, Nov. 4.

At Fort McCoy, the point of contact is Maj. Mary Lou Tomko, installation voting officer.

Retiree Appreciation Day set for Sept. 5 at McCoy   [ back to top ]

Retirees from all branches of the armed forces and their family members may attend a Retiree Appreciation Day at Fort McCoy, Friday, Sept. 5.

The event will begin with arrival and a sign-in period beginning at 7 a.m. at building 905, and will conclude at the Wisconsin Military Academy (WMA), building 90, at 3 p.m.

Photo identification is required for all people entering Fort McCoy.

Retiree Appreciation Day is an opportunity for all armed forces retirees, spouses, widows and/or guests to receive updated information about retiree entitlement programs.

Highlights will include a keynote speaker and other briefings about retiree benefits in the morning and a benefits fair, to be held at the WMA, in the afternoon.

Attendance at the Retiree Appreciation Day is free, but registration is required. Lunch can be purchased at McCoy’s, building 1571.

Registration forms must be received by Aug. 29.

MWR golf tournament Sept. 12 at Hiawatha  [ back to top ]

Fort McCoy Morale, Welfare and Recreation will present its annual Four-Person Golf Tournament Friday, Sept. 12 at the Hiawatha Golf Club in Tomah.

The event will feature a shotgun start at 11 a.m.

The cost will be $15, which includes dinner, but does not include green fees. Hiawatha members do not have to pay green fees.

Door prizes will be available. An awards ceremony will include food and refreshments.

Registration forms will be available at the Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122. Eligible participants are all military (Active, Reserve, Retired) and family members, Department of Defense civilian and family members, commercial sponsors of the event, and Fort McCoy contract employees.

Reciprocal cards and other discount offers cannot be used.

Commissary case lot sale set for Sept. 19-20    [ back to top ]

The Fort McCoy Commissary, building 1537, will hold a case lot sale Friday, Sept. 19 and Saturday, Sept. 20.

Commissaries are open to authorized military personnel.

The hours of the sale will be from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. both days.

Participants may be required to pick up the items at a building other than the Commissary. More information will be available later.

Authorized personnel also may participate in case lot sales scheduled Oct. 3-4 in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn., (sponsored by Great Lakes Naval Station), and at Green Bay, Wis., Nov. 2. More information about times and locations for the Minneapolis/St. Paul and Green Bay sales will be available at a future date.

Applications for archery, small game available   [ back to top ]

The Fort McCoy Permit Sales Office has applications available for the Fort McCoy regular archery and small game seasons, which will begin in September.

Applications can be obtained from the Fort McCoy Public Web site, by e-mail request or in person at the Permit Sales Office building 2168, South 8th Ave.

Individuals can either mail or hand-deliver their applications for processing. All permits and regulations will be mailed in a timely manner. Over-the-counter sales of the archery and small game permits will begin Sept. 15.

Individuals planning to hunt opening weekend — Sept. 13 and 14 — must mail or hand deliver their applications to the Fort McCoy Permit Sales Office. Personnel are encouraged to submit these as soon as possible to expedite processing.

The Directorate of Public Works Natural Resource Branch is working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to make these permits available for purchase through the DNR State Automated License Issuance System (ALIS). It is anticipated, however, the ALIS system will not be in place at Fort McCoy for the start of the 2008 Regular Archery and Small Game seasons.

Consequently, these permits will continue to be sold through the Permit Sales Office.
