Fort McCoy blood drive set for Aug. 13

An Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP) blood drive will be held from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13 at building 1668, the old Fort McCoy Post Exchange.

The drive is open to everyone in the Fort McCoy community who meets donor standards, including the public. The Fort Benning, Ga., Medical Department Activity is helping to sponsor the blood drive.

The ASBP is different from other programs because it is the only one operated by the military — for the military’s needs.

It was established more than 50 years ago and is operated under the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The ASBP collects blood from all servicemembers, government employees, military family members and retirees, and supplies it to military medical treatment facilities at home and to troops deployed worldwide. There are 19 blood donor centers in the United States and one each in Germany, Guam, Japan and Hawaii.

Appointments for ASBP blood drives can be made online at anytime.

Go to the ASBP Web site at http://www.militaryblood.dod.mil and click on the icon on the left side of the page "give blood now." Interested donors will be required to enter the ZIP code for their blood drive, which is 54656 for the Fort McCoy blood drive. Appointments can be made at Fort McCoy for times between 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

Motorists entering Fort McCoy from locations off post are required to show photo identification.

For more information, interested personnel in the Fort McCoy community also can contact Staff Sgt. Alexander Crocker at (608) 388-9512 or military cell telephone at (608) 630-6277.
