New mandatory seat-belt law in effect in Wisconsin   [ back to top ]

A new, mandatory seat-belt law for Wisconsin motorists and passengers was approved as part of the recently passed state budget. The law replaces a secondary seat-belt law and parallels a recently passed mandatory seat-belt law in Minnesota.

As a federal installation, Fort McCoy requires all motorists and passengers to wear seat belts when driving on the installation.

The new mandatory laws mean that law enforcement personnel can stop motorists/passengers if they are not wearing seat belts and ticket them for the infraction. Previously, motorists had to commit another violation, such as speeding, to be issued a citation for not wearing seat belts.
