|Fort McCoy MWR events, activities
now available on Facebook
|People who would like to keep up with Family and
Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) events now have another avenue —
the Fort McCoy MWR page on Facebook.
Jobi Spolum, Fort McCoy Directorate of Family and MWR (DFMWR) Marketing
Director, said the venture is the latest effort to keep people informed
about Fort McCoy MWR activities. The Family and MWR Command (FMWRC) is
encouraging installations use social media outlets to support the MWR
program and free flow of information, she said.
Social networking now is the No. 1 activity on the Internet, according
to information provided by FMWRC. Facebook, with its fastest growing
demographic in the 35-54 age group and its largest demographic in the
18-24 age group, has ideal target groups for the Fort McCoy MWR program,
Spolum said. Overall, Facebook has 300 million users and almost 84,000
people in the Army who are registered as “liking it.”
“It’s an interactive, two-way medium where we can post things that other
people can access,” Spolum said. “With Facebook, they have an easy way
to ask us questions or send comments to us.”
The Fort McCoy MWR Facebook entry is meant to complement the other
sources of MWR information, which include a weekly MWR newsletter, a Web
site at http://www.mccoymwr.com
and a monthly advertisement page in The Real McCoy, Spolum said.
Since the Fort McCoy MWR Facebook site was launched April 23, 81 people
have declared they “like” Fort McCoy MWR and have automatic links to the
Facebook page. This category replaces the former “fan” designation.
“We will update our events, including those open to the public such as
the Army Concert Tour and Soldier Show, and what’s happening in our
facilities,” Spolum said. “We also had information about recent events,
such as the Health and Wellness Fair (May 12). We received comments
about that event from people who attended.”
In addition to the work force, Facebook will be a good tool for people
in the public who don’t have ready access to some of MWR’s other
marketing efforts, as well as military personnel who are stationed at
other installations and considering serving a tour here or civilians who
may seek employment here, Spolum said. Not all of the events/facilities
listed on the page will be open/available to the public.
To access the site, people will be required to go to Facebook and
establish an account, Spolum said. They can search for the Fort McCoy
MWR Facebook page.
