Community Activity Center
gets renovation, upgrades

The Community Activity Center (CAC), building 2000, at Fort McCoy has added some paint here, new window treatments there, and improved offerings and comfort throughout to give its patrons a cozy place to hang out at any time of the day.

Sheila Peterson, CAC manager, said the project included a generous amount of self-help work. Staff members did all of the painting, helped hang curtains, assembled and moved furniture, etc.

"They are eager for (authorized patrons of) the Fort McCoy community to come in and enjoy the newly renovated facilities," Peterson said.

Adam Bloor, a CAC recreation aide, said personnel using the facility have been very impressed with the renovations and variety of activities/services offered.

Everyone is welcome to attend an open house from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, which includes free refreshments.

"We realized we have an old building to work with, but we wanted to make it as comfortable as possible for Soldiers and the Fort McCoy community," Peterson said. "We kept the things that worked, and added new things or expanded on current offerings, whenever possible."

One of the major improvements was dividing the piano practice room and the music room into two separate areas. Peterson said if someone was taking lessons under the old setup, it took up the whole music room area. In the new setup, someone can take music (piano) lessons, while other people practice instruments. The CAC has drums, saxophones, guitars, and other instruments for patron use.

In addition, the TV lounge was relocated upstairs and offers three big screens for viewing.

The CAC is expecting new carpeting, couches and chairs for the TV lounge. A movie room is available for viewing DVD movies on site.

The CAC has retained the Friday and Saturday movie nights at 6:30 p.m., which include free popcorn. Call (608) 388-3213 for a movie schedule.

Cardio equipment was added on the second floor for those that want a quick workout and can't get to the Fitness Center or want the convenience of being able to work out on their way into or leaving work, she said.

Pfc. Samuel Vargas of the 49th Adjutant General Company of Sacramento, Calif., said he appreciated the updates.

"I like the free use of the pool table and Ping Pong," Vargas said. "The installation has done a good job upgrading this building and our barracks."

Peterson said all of the activities at the CAC can be used for free. Patrons can check out DVDs for a fee to view off site.

The CAC is waiting for a new Foosball table, a 14-foot shuffleboard and also has six additional computers for the computer lab on order.

The Frame Shop has been relocated to the second floor and offers custom framing/matting and also has a variety of framed prints for sale.

The CAC's current hours of operation are Thursday-Monday 11 a.m.-9 p.m. For more information, call the CAC or visit the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Web site at http://www.mccoymwr.com/Facilities/reccenter.htm.
