Container-loading facility approved at installation

A new container-loading site will be constructed at Fort McCoy.

Jane Schmidt, the Directorate of Logistics Transportation Division chief, said the $5 million project includes a 30,000-square-foot facility and an adjoining storage yard.

“It’s a nice facility. When it’s done it will support our container-loading needs well into the future,” Schmidt said. “The modern conveniences in the facility will make it suitable to support any needs that units would have, such as a setup to support laptops to inventory equipment, stuff and unstuff containers, and pack equipment for shipment to home station.”

“We will be well-positioned to support exercises, deployment needs, etc., for any container-loading mission units would want to conduct here,” Schmidt said. The facility will support the installation’s strategic objectives to modernize its infrastructure and help maintain and expand its military training customer base, she said.

The facility, to be built in the 2100 block on South 8th Avenue, will include office space, storage space, a tool-crib area, lumber racks, locker rooms and parking areas.

It will replace an area that includes three separate facilities and a container-loading yard.

“The facility will be set up much like a commercial freight house, to handle commercial trucks, with rail access located nearby,” Schmidt said. “Everything is located conveniently and in one building to support the operations.”

Schmidt said the facility is large enough to handle all of the necessary operations at one time.

This will be convenient to support training on post, such as exercises, or for units that need to load equipment into containers to send to support exercises in other theaters, such as in overseas locations, she said.

With everything located in one area and with the available space in the facility, it also will be a much safer operation, Schmidt said.

The contractor will be Carntribe-Clement 3, A Joint Venture, LLC, of Ozark, Ala. The facility currently is scheduled to be completed by August 2013.
