By Rob Schuette, The Real McCoy Staff

Law enforcement personnel now are located in a new facility, the Public Safety Center, building 1681, at Fort McCoy.

The facility is located on West Eaton Road, immediately to the east of the Fire Department, building 1680.

Mark Fritsche, chief of the Emergency Services Division of the Directorate of Emergency Services / Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization, and Security (DES/DPTMS) at Fort McCoy, said a ribbon cutting/open house will be held at the new facility from 1-2 p.m. Thursday, March 20. Guided tours and refreshments will be available following the ribbon cutting. Everyone in the installation community is welcome to visit the new facility during that time and should clear attendance with their supervisors.

"The new building will consolidate all emergency personnel into one area, so it will make it easier for us to coordinate emergency services," Fritsche said. "Future plans are to have the two facilities connected."

"It will be a new chapter in Emergency Services to have a nice, modern facility to provide the (law-enforcement) services," he said. "It will provide us with a great working environment that will encourage our personnel to strive to always be professional and have a great sense of pride in the services they provide."

Personnel who use the services, such as those who come to the police desk, will appreciate the updated and more comfortable waiting area, Fritsche said.

In addition to law enforcement, the new facility will include Physical Security and the Criminal Investigation Division. The telephone numbers and e-mail addresses will remain the same.

The general police desk telephone number is (608) 388-2266.

"We basically unplugged our equipment in the old buildings and moved it to the new building," Fritsche said.

The 16,000-square-foot, $4.3 million Public Safety Center was built by Lakeshore Engineering Service of Detroit, Mich., the project contractor. Communications towers also are included in the project.

The facilities formerly used by the DES will be turned back to the installation for such purposes as supporting the Patriot Warrior Exercise, Fritsche said. The future use of the facilities is to be determined.
