MMA fighting event coming to Fort McCoy April 9

“Rumble at the Rumpel” is set for Saturday, April 9 at the Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122. The event is open to the public.

Doors to the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) cage fight event will open at 5 p.m., with the fights beginning at 7 p.m. The Fort McCoy Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR) will host the amateur-level event, which features U.S. Army Soldiers from Fort McCoy and elsewhere.

MMA cage fighting brings together masters of various martial arts, such as jiu-jitsu, karate — http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karate, kung fu — http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kungfu, kickboxing — http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kickboxing, boxing and wrestling or the best combination thereof, in no-holds barred combat to determine the best martial art form. The matches are held in a hexagonal cage.

Participants conduct moves, which include kicks, grabs, arm bars, and punches and knees to the face and body of their opponents. Many Soldiers who participate in these events are well-versed in combatives training. Participants will be bare foot, wear shorts and have their hands taped.

Strict rules and procedures will be enforced during the fights to ensure the safety and well-being of the competitors.

Fight pairings will be determined by weight classes/divisions. A Rumble Pre-Party will be held Friday, April 8 at 7 p.m. at McCoy’s, building 1571. The free event will include fighter weigh-ins, meetings and greetings and entertainment.

Tickets are on sale for the April 9 event at the Rumpel Fitness Center; Community Activity Center, building 2000; and Pine View Campground, building 8053 for members of the Fort McCoy community. Ringside seats will cost $40, and floor seats are $25. A limited number of tickets are available. The tickets, if any remain, will go on sale to the public March 18.

Profits from the event will go to the DFMWR fund and will be used to support DFMWR facilities and programs for Soldiers and their Family members in the Fort McCoy community.

Soldiers who would be interested in participating in the event can call Staff Sgt. Todd Raymond at 920-960-7862 for more information.

For more information about the event, call the Fort McCoy DFMWR Event Hotline telephone numbers at 608-388-7400 locally or toll-free 1-877-864-4969.
