Pre-retirement briefing

Jeff Murphy, a veterans employment specialist with the Division of Employment and Training/Office of Veterans Service for the State of Wisconsin Work Force Development, provides information to servicemembers attending a Transition Assistance Program workshop at Fort McCoy. The workshop, which was held as part of the Army Career and Alumni Program, briefs attendees on a number of post-military options, including retirement and obtaining a civilian job. The program is held approximately four times each year, with the next workshop scheduled for May. For more information, call 608-388-7941.

Chili cook-off

Chesser farewell Feb. 27;change of command Feb. 29  [ back to top ]
Garrison Commander Col. David E. Chesser will host his last commander’s call Monday, Feb. 27 from 3-5:30 p.m. at McCoy’s, building 1571.

All members of the Fort McCoy community are welcome to stop by and wish him farewell.

The garrison change-of-command ceremony will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29 at the Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122.
The command will pass from Chesser to Col. Steven W. Nott.

Nott currently is assigned as the military executive for the Army Reserve Forces Policy Committee within the office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army, Manpower and Reserve Affairs.

 

Fitness center hours adjusted Feb. 27-29  [ back to top ]

The Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122, will have adjusted hours Feb. 27 through Feb. 29 for the garrison change-of-command ceremony.

The gymnasium and weight room will close Monday, Feb. 27 at 8 a.m. and reopen Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 4 p.m. The entire facility will be closed Feb. 29 from noon-4 p.m.

No fitness classes will be held Feb. 27 - 28.

Whitetail Customer Appreciation March 3, weather permitting  [ back to top ]
Whitetail Ridge Ski Area Customer Appreciation day will be Saturday, March 3 from noon-4 p.m., weather permitting.

Door-prize participants will have a chance to win a 2013 season ski pass. Food bingo will be held from 2-3 p.m. The event is open to the public.

TSP workshops offered in March at Army Community Service  [ back to top ]
Two Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) workshops will be offered in March at the Army Community Service Center, building 2111. The workshops are open to the entire Fort McCoy community.

The TSP Getting Started workshop is Tuesday, March 6 from 1-4 p.m. The workshop is designed for beginning investors who are interested in learning how to open a TSP account, make TSP investment choices, and develop an investment strategy based upon financial goals and needs.

The TSP Retirement workshop is Thursday, March 8 from 8-11:30 a.m. This workshop is targeted for TSP investors who are planning on retiring within the next 15 years. The focus of the workshop is TSP investment choices and their compositions.

The workshop also examines withdrawal and annuity options for participants, including the transferring of money in and out of the TSP program with other qualified retirement accounts.

Registration for the workshops is required by March 2.

Health Benefits Service Day March 7 at building 2187  [ back to top ]

A Health Benefits Service Day will be hosted by the Fort McCoy Civilian Personnel Advisory Center, Wednesday, March 7 from 9:30 a.m.-noon in the first-floor conference room of building 2187. 

A representative from Blue Cross/Blue Shield (BCBS) will be available to answer questions and assist with any problems personnel have. Employees who attend and present a current BCBS ID card can sign up for a free pedometer. Information also will be available on how to receive a $50 BCBS Wellness Card benefit, which can be used for qualified medical expenses.

AFTB offering workshops at Army Community Service Center   [ back to top ]
Army Family Team Building (AFTB) is offering several workshops Wednesdays in March. The workshops are held at the Army Community Service Center, building 2111. The workshops are open to the entire Fort McCoy community.

Leader Assisted Problem Solving Skills is March 7 from 8-9:30 a.m. The class provides leaders with information to guide individuals and groups through the problem-solving process. Registration is required by Friday, March 2.

Relationship Enhancement Skills is March 21 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Topics include enhancing personal relationships, exploring personality traits, communication, and personal conflict management. Registration is required by Friday, March 16.

Meeting Management will be offered March 28 from 8-9:30 a.m. This class outlines the reasons for meetings and how to effectively conduct them. It also explores implementing the phases of meeting management to organize productive meetings. Registration is required by Friday, March 23.

DFAS Travel Administrator offering DTS classes in March  [ back to top ]
Defense Travel System (DTS) classes will be offered by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service Lead Defense Travel Administrator at Fort McCoy in March at building 50, Distance Learning classroom 3.

The class schedule is:
March 7 — DTS Approval Process and Travel Policy, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. This one-day class explains the sources of Department of Defense (DoD) Temporary Duty (TDY) Travel Policy and details the common rules to assist in the Review/Approval process. This class is highly recommended for all DTS Reviewing and Approving Officials.

March 21-22 — DTS TDY Documents, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. This two-day class explains how to create authorizations and vouchers. Participants will create several types of authorizations and vouchers using the DTS input screens. Class topics are: Introduction to DTS, DTS Log In, DTS Users, Navigating DTS, Authorizations, and Vouchers. This class provides hands-on experience by creating authorizations and vouchers in class.

Classes are open to military and DoD civilian personnel. Register no later than three work days prior to the class start date. Class sizes are limited.

Time change to occur March 11 in Wisconsin   [ back to top ]

Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday, March 11 at 2 a.m.

Clocks should be set ahead one hour the night before.

Time changes also are an ideal time to check safety equipment and change batteries in smoke alarms/fire detectors, etc.

 

Rear Detachment Commander, FRG training March 12-13 [ back to top ]
Rear Detachment and Family Readiness Group (FRG) training will be held from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. March 12 and 13 at the Army Community Service Center, building 2111.

Topics covered will include the roles and responsibilities of the positions.

Registration is requested no later than March 9.

Financial Peace accepting registration for March 22 course  [ back to top ]

Financial Peace Military Edition, which begins March 22, is accepting registrations through Friday, March 16. The 13-week course, produced by financial expert Dave Ramsey, will be held Thursdays from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Fort McCoy Chapel Center, building 2675.

Sgt. 1st Class Jennifer Fey, the Fort McCoy chaplain assistant noncommissioned officer in charge, is the facilitator for the course. A complimentary lunch will be offered to course participants.

The course is available to Soldiers, Family members, and Department of the Army civilians.

The class is limited to 29 participants. Participants must attend at least 10 class sessions to receive a certificate of completion.

Financial Peace Military Edition is the military version of the Financial Peace University and is aimed at Soldiers and other military personnel.

Among the topics covered are saving techniques, debt reduction, credit bureaus and collection practices, insurance, bargain shopping, investments, planning for college and retirement and real estate and mortgages.

Free kits, which include a workbook, access to a downloadable audio library and budgeting forms, will be provided.

Armed Forces Day Open House set for May 19 at Fort McCoy  [ back to top ]

The annual Armed Forces Day Open House is set for Saturday, May 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fort McCoy. The event is free and open to the public.

Activities scheduled include an Interactive Marksmanship Gallery, personalized dog tags, narrated installation bus tours, smoke house demonstrations, and camouflage face painting. The History Center and World War II Commemorative Buildings will be open throughout the day.

Visitors must enter the installation via Gate 15 off of Highway 21 between Sparta and Tomah, Wis. Adults must have a photo ID. For details, call 608-388-2407 or send an e-mail to usarmy.mccoy.imcom-northeast.list.pao-admin@mail.mil.

 

86th Training Division TPU vacancies available  [ back to top ]
The 86th Training Division has Troop Program Unit vacancies for qualified officers, warrant officers and enlisted Soldiers.

Needed military occupational specialties/branches include chemical, engineer, military police, medical, and logistics.

The 86th Training Division is headquartered at Fort McCoy, with subordinate units in Milwaukee.

The unit’s mission is to conduct joint Warrior and Combat Support Training Exercise rotations designed to prepare select units for deployment.
