Applications for Spring Turkey Season
can be postmarked beginning Feb. 18

Applications for the 2009 Fort McCoy Spring Turkey Season now are available and can be postmarked beginning Wednesday, Feb. 18. The Fort McCoy Permit Sales Office will continue to process all applications and mail the permits to successful applicants.

David Beckmann, Fort McCoy wildlife biologist, said the installation still is transitioning to use the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) Automated License Issuance System (ALIS) for the sale of all hunting and fishing permits.

"We had anticipated to have everything in place for the Spring Turkey Season, but were unable to finalize all the requirements needed to make it a smooth and user-friendly system," he said.

An important change to the 2009 Spring Turkey application process is that all applicants are required to have a WDNR Customer Number when applying for a permit.

Individuals who do not yet have a Customer Number can contact a WDNR Service Center or call their toll free number at 888-936-7463 (seven-days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.) to have one created to get their application processed.

Beckmann said any application that doesn’t have a WDNR Customer Number will be returned without action.

"We hope to have the ALIS process in place for the sale of fishing and fall hunting permits later this year," Beckmann said. "Once everything is in place, we expect the permit process will be more convenient and efficient for our customers."

Personnel interested in the Spring Turkey season can get an application at the Fort McCoy Public Web site, by e-mailing Permit Sales or picking them up at the Permit Sales Office, 2168 South 8th Ave.

Applications can be downloaded from the Fort McCoy Public Web site at

E-mail requests for applications can be sent to usarmy.mccoy.imcom-northeast.mail.dpw-permit-sales@mail.mil.

The 2009 spring turkey season dates are April 15-17, April 20-24, April 27-May 1, May 4-8, May 11-15 and May 18-22.

These are five-day hunts running Monday-Friday (except for the first season, which is only three-days long and coincides with the start of the Wisconsin spring turkey season).

No weekends are included in the hunts because of increased military training at McCoy at those times, Beckmann said.

The cost of a Fort McCoy Spring Turkey Permit is $10.

Payment in the form of a money order (payable to the Treasurer of the United States) must be included with each application. Personal checks and cash are not accepted. A maximum of four applications may be included in an envelope.

Further details and restrictions accompany the application form. For more information, call Permit Sales at 608-388-3337.
