Outdoor enthusiasts enjoyed a full day of activities during the annual Winter Extravaganza event, which was held Jan. 26 during almost perfect winter weather at the Whitetail Ridge Ski Area at Fort McCoy.

Nearly 360 people participated in the snowtubing event, which was one of the largest totals ever recorded, said Karl Coughlin of the Fort McCoy Outdoor Recreation staff.

More than 25 runners competed in the 5K Polar Run event, which was 10 more runners than last year, he said.

A high participation rate also was recorded in the other events, which included the big air competition, snowboarding trick demonstrations, slalom races and the obstacle course.

"It was perfect running weather, and it was warm enough the whole day that people could stay out for an extended period of time," Coughlin said.

Because of the success of last year's event, the same activities were offered, which included a pancake breakfast and skiing/snowboarding lessons.

Planning already is under way for next year's event, which may include some new events, Coughlin said.

Attendees also could participate in the Global Positioning System/Geocaching Treasure Hunt, which is under way and will run through March 2.

Currently, there are three caches located along the Whitetail Ridge cross-country skiing/hiking trails.

For each cache participants find, their names will be entered into a drawing to win a handheld Magellan eXplorist 200 GPS unit at the end of the contest.

Several other Saturday events are planned and will be open to the public as well, he said. They are the Big Air Competition (Feb. 16), Whitetail Ridge Fear Factor (Feb. 23) and Customer Appreciation Day (March 1).

Whitetail Ridge is open 4:30-9 p.m. Fridays, noon-9 p.m. Saturdays and noon-6 p.m. Sundays, weather permitting.
