New installation commander at Fort McCoy in April  [ back to top ]

      Installation Commander Col. Derek J. Sentinella announced there will be a change of command at Fort McCoy April 3.

      Sentinella has been installation commander at Fort McCoy since June 2005. His next assignment will be overseas.

      The new installation commander will be Col. David E. Chesser.

      Chesser currently works at the 88th Regional Support Command at Fort Snelling, Minn.

New cardio kick class offered 3 times a week   [ back to top ]

      A new cardio kick class is being offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122, at Fort McCoy for authorized patrons.

      The class will run from 11:30 a.m.-noon each day. Cardio kick provides an intense cardio workout with a touch of strength training and a kickboxing flare.

Personnel can earn fitness point bonuses  [ back to top ]

      The Fort McCoy Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122, will hold two special days of activities to allow authorized personnel to earn extra points for the Fitness Frenzy competition.

      The first will be double points for attending Bosu or Pilates classes Friday, Feb. 8. Bosu will run from 6:35-7:05 a.m., while Pilates runs from 11-11:30 a.m.

      Participants also can earn bonus points for attending classes during the Weekend Warrior Workout trilogy Saturday, Feb. 23.

      A Kickboxing class will begin at 8 a.m., Pilates will start at 9 a.m., and Step Aerobics will follow at 10 a.m. All authorized participants will earn three points per class for attending this training.

      Various other classes that participants can earn Fitness Frenzy points are held throughout the week.

Spring Turkey season applications available    [ back to top ]

      Applications for the Fort McCoy Spring Turkey hunts are available and can be postmarked beginning Monday, Feb. 11.

      The applications can be picked up at the Permit Sales Office, building 2168, be downloaded and printed at the Web site http://www.mccoy.army.mil by clicking on Recreation Opportunities, Fishing and Hunting, and Applications (choosing PDF or Document format) Spring Turkey Hunting or can be obtained by e-mailing a request to usarmy.mccoy.imcom-northeast.mail.dpw-permit-sales@mail.mil.

      A limited number of permits are available for each of the six hunting periods. Permits will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Hunters must mail their completed application(s) and necessary payment. Walk-in applications will not be accepted.

      Seasons will run between April 16 and May 23. The first season will be three days long, while the remaining seasons will run from Monday-Friday.

      Applicants are encouraged to mail their application on the first date they can be postmarked (Feb. 11) to give themselves the best chance of receiving a permit. Hunters will be notified by mail if they receive a permit.

Black History Month observance Feb. 14  [ back to top ]

      A Fort McCoy observance for Black History Month will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14 at McCoy's, building 1571.

      The event is open to members of the Fort McCoy community. A program featuring a guest speaker, Evrod Cassimy, will begin at noon. Cassimy is a WMTV (Madison) NBC 15 reporter and Rhythm and Blues singer.

Commissary Scholarship applications due Feb. 20    [ back to top ]

      Applications are being accepted for the 2008 Commissary Scholarship program.

      Students are eligible if one of their parents is active-duty, Reserve/Guard or retired military personnel or they are the survivor of a deceased servicemember and have a military dependent identification card.

      Applicants must be planning to attend (either beginning or continuing) a college or university on a full-time basis for the 2008-2009 school year. Previous recipients are eligible to apply for another year.

      Fort McCoy had five scholarship recipients for the 2007-2008 school year. Each received a $1,500 scholarship.

      The deadline to turn in applications to commissaries is Feb. 20.

Family Readiness Group Leader training Feb. 22-23   [ back to top ]

      Family Readiness Group (FRG) Leader Training will be offered Friday, Feb. 22 and Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Army Community Service (ACS) facility, 2111 South 8th Ave. at Fort McCoy.

      The training will run from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. both days and is open to anyone interested in family readiness, such as FRG volunteers, Family Readiness Liaisons, Commanders, Rear Detachment Commanders, and FRG Leaders.

      Among the topics to be covered are ACS Overview, Building a Resource Library, Battlemind Training for Spouses, FRG Leader Handbook Overview, Volunteer Management, Working with Families, Crisis Intervention, Finance, Legal and TRICARE.

      Registration is requested by Friday, Feb. 15 by calling ACS at (608) 388-3505.


Women's History Month observance March 4   [ back to top ]

      A Fort McCoy observance for Women's  History Month will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, March 4 at McCoy's, building 1571.

      The event is open to members of the Fort McCoy community. A program featuring a guest speaker, Elizabeth Burmaster, will begin at noon. Burmaster is the Wisconsin State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

VITA Center accepting military appointments   [ back to top ]

      The Fort McCoy Volunteer Income Tax Assistance  (VITA) Center, building 1644, is accepting appointments for military-eligible personnel.

      Personnel seeking the services must be active-duty military, retired military or family members. Appointments to active-duty military will have precedence.

      VITA personnel will help military personnel fill out individual federal and state income tax returns. E-filing services also are available.

ROA organization offering scholarships  [ back to top ]

      The Reserve Officers Association (ROA) offers $500 merit-based scholarships for both undergraduate and postgraduate study at accredited colleges and universities. 

      Undergraduate scholarships are available for children and grandchildren of ROA members, and graduate scholarships are available to ROA members. 

      Sponsors must be ROA members. Membership is open to any active, reserve, retired, or former officer who served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps,  Coast Guard, Public Health Service, or the NOAA. Application deadline for the 2008-09 School Year is April 10.
