Fort McCoy will have six hunting periods beginning in April. Each period
will be five days (Monday-Friday) compared to the state’s seven-day
season, except for the first season, which is three days
(Wednesday-Friday), said David Beckmann, Fort McCoy wildlife biologist.
The shorter Fort McCoy seasons help minimize disruptions to military
training and also leave at least two days open for scouting with no
disruptions to other hunters.
Hunters must identify their category and season preference on the
applications. Categories for the Spring Turkey Season are: A) active and
retired military, Reserve and National Guard and military dependent
identification-card holders, B) active and retired Department of Defense
and nonappropriated fund civilian employees and their legal dependents,
and, C) general public. The category allotments for each hunting period
will be A) 25 percent, B) 15 percent and C) 60 percent. Any permits not
awarded during the category A and B drawings will be available to
category C applicants.
Successful Fort McCoy permit applicants will be compared with the WDNR
spring turkey recipient list and removed from the Fort McCoy selection
if selected for a state zone.
Permits must be purchased from the Automated License Issue System
available at an authorized WDNR agent statewide, including Pine View
Campground, building 8053, and the Exchange (military authorized only)
at Fort McCoy.
Hunters should know that some of Fort McCoy’s rules are not the same as
the state of Wisconsin Spring Turkey Season. Rules hunters should be
aware of include:

weapons on the installation must ensure they are unloaded and cased.
Fort McCoy also does not allow concealed carry weapons on the
installation as is legal under the state of Wisconsin concealed carry
• Fort McCoy turkey hunters do not need to register their turkey on Fort
McCoy, but should follow the WDNR registration procedures and be sure to
select Fort McCoy as the hunting zone.
