Creative veterans encouraged
to enter national contest

VA MEDICAL CENTER (Tomah, Wis.) — Veterans who are receiving care from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) are invited to enter the local Creative Arts Competition at the Tomah VA.

Veterans can enter in the following Creative Arts Divisions:

• Visual Art (53 categories such as painting, sculpting, needlework, crafts, leatherwork, jewelry making, mosaic, photography, digital art, etc.);
• Music (vocal and instrumental, solo or group, original or not, etc.);
• Dance (ballroom, ethnic, interpretive, wheelchair, group, solo or duo, etc.)
• Drama (comedy, patriotic, religious, mime/juggling/magic, multimedia videos, etc.)
• Creative Writing (humorous, inspirational, patriotic, personal experience, short story, etc.)

Entries will be judged at the local competition at the Tomah VA and places awarded.

Each first-place winner in each division/category will advance to the national competition.

First-place winners nationally may be invited to the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival, to be held in La Crosse, Wis., in October. The Tomah VA hosted the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival in 1997.

The National Veterans Creative Arts program provides veterans with an opportunity to be acknowledged for their artistic talents and skills, as well as to highlight the work done by creative arts therapists in VA facilities nationwide.

The Tomah VA will hold two separate competitions. The artwork will be judged in February. The performing arts (music, dance, drama and creative writing) will be judged in March. The submission deadline for the artwork is Thursday, Feb. 4. Entries should be delivered to the VA Medical Center, Building 402, Room 1200.

All art entries must have been created since March 1, 2009. The medical center staff and judges have the right to change an entry’s category, as needed. The VA Medical Center reserves the right to withhold entries from public viewing, as needed.

For more information about the visual arts competition, please call Occupational Therapy at the Tomah VA, 608-372-3971, Ext. 64262.

The performing arts competition (music, dance, drama and creative writing) will be judged March 10.
