Fort McCoy facilities offer variety of videos, books, more to help weather winter

If the weather is too bad to go outside, several Fort McCoy organizations offer materials people can use inside.

The Community Activity Center (CAC), building 2000, the Army Community Service (ACS) Center Resource Library, building 2111, and the Religious Support Office (RSO) Library, building 2675, offer DVDs, books, etc., that authorized personnel can use inside to break up the monotony of winter weather.

A variety of materials are available through the CAC and can be taken home, said Jobi Spolum, Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) Marketing director.

DVDs are available for rent. The rental fee is $2 per day Monday-Thursday.

All DVDs rented on Fridays don’t have to be returned until the following Monday. Many new-to-DVD movies are available for rent. Video games from the CAC also can be rented for use off post.

Titles for DVDs/video games or more information is available by visiting the CAC, calling 608-388-3213 or visiting the Fort McCoy Morale, Welfare and Recreation Web site at http://www.mccoymwr.com  and clicking on the CAC section.

Spolum said the CAC has a paperback book exchange section where Soldiers and other authorized personnel can take out paperback books.

The CAC also offers the rental of laptop computers and air cards for laptops that can be taken off site.

Authorized personnel who want informational, instructional or motivational DVDs may find what they’re looking for at the ACS Center Resource Library or the RSO Library.

ACS has DVDs, books and audio CDs to support the ACS mission. Information about Finance, Self-Improvement, Volunteers, Employment, Education, Family Advocacy, Parenting, Relocation and Consumer Affairs is available for 30-day check out.

Family Focus program participants who check out materials also earn Family Focus Franks, which are collected and redeemed for FMWR items, such as a pizza and bowling party, said Lori Enghusen, ACS Information and Referral Program Manager. Enghusen said Family Focus participants can do additional activities at home to earn even more Family Focus Franks. Families not enrolled in the Family Focus Program are encouraged to contact ACS at 608-388-3505 for complete details.

Chaplain (Lt. Col.) James Brown of the RSO said mobilized Soldiers and other authorized members of the installation’s worship community can use the RSO Library and check out religious and motivational DVDs and other video materials.

Participants in the Rumpel Fitness Center Family Connections program also can earn credit for doing some activities at home, Spolum said. Examples include home repair, cleaning house and participating in indoor exercise programs, and even shoveling snow.

Anyone who is tired of being stuck indoors at home may think about being stuck indoors at an excellent lodging facility at Fort McCoy’s Pine View Recreation Area and enjoy the opportunity for winter activities during the season. The season will run through approximately March, at the nearby Whitetail Ridge Ski Area. For more information about lodging, call Pine View at 608-388-3517 or toll free 800-531-4703. Information about Whitetail Ridge hill conditions also is available by calling 608-388-3517/4498.

Winter is a good time to plan a vacation or leisure trip to a number of warm-weather locations, including Disney World, or even overseas travel later in the year.

Travel information, including cruises, is available and can be picked up at the Leisure Travel Services Office (Information, Ticketing and Registration), which is located at the CAC, or can be accessed at the MWR Web site or by calling 608-388-3213/3011.

Of course, there are many leisure activities to do inside at Fort McCoy facilities and outside later in the year if people have the time.

For more information, call the MWR Events Line at 877-864-4969 or visit the Fort McCoy MWR Web site at http://www.mccoymwr.com to learn more about the events/activities available in the Fort McCoy community.
