Fitness center offers myriad training opportunities

Almost any fitness opportunity available at commercial fitness facilities is available to authorized patrons of the Fort McCoy Rumpel Fitness Center, building 1122. Authorized patrons also pay no fees to use the McCoy facility, potentially saving hundreds of dollars each year.

Jeff Uhlig, chief of the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Community Recreation Division, said authorized fitness center users include servicemembers, Department of Defense employees and their Family members. Everyone who has a Common Access Card is requested to bring it to the facility to help facilitate registration, he said.

The process begins with checking in at the front counter. Uhlig said fitness center staff can answer any questions personnel have about the facility or how to use the equipment.

The fitness center offers the latest in exercise equipment, such as treadmills and stationary bicycles in the Cardio Theater. Among other fitness opportunities are a free-weight room, an indoor swimming pool, and a sauna.

Classes are available and are taught by qualified/certified instructors. A popular, recent addition is Zumba, a Latin-inspired dance class. The fitness center also offers volleyball, basketball and flag football leagues.

Uhlig said newly refurbished locker rooms offer comfortable settings to prepare for exercise. Lockers are available to secure and store clothing and personal items. Towels and locks are available for use in the facility and can be obtained at the check-in counter. Shower and restroom facilities also are available.

Uhlig said military or civilian organizations wishing to pursue group fitness opportunities can reserve facilities/equipment by sending an e-mail to jeffrey.e.uhlig.naf@mail.mil.

The current hours for the gymnasium/locker rooms/weight rooms, etc., are Monday-Thursday 5 a.m.-8 p.m.; Fridays 5 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 6 a.m.-2 p.m.

The indoor pool is open Monday-Thursday 6-8 a.m. and 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Fridays 6 a.m.-8 a.m. and 11 a.m.-6:30 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The current hours were driven by budgetary constraints, but were a product of customer input, Uhlig said.
