CYS Services winter camp keeps youth engaged

Community service, fitness, education and fun were on the agenda for youth participating in the Fort McCoy Child, Youth and School (CYS) Services winter camp from Dec. 23-30 at Fort McCoy.

Youth got off to a good start and spread the holiday spirit by going caroling at a local senior center facility in Sparta Dec. 23, said Cori Yahnke, Fort McCoy CYS Services Boys & Girls Club of Fort McCoy and School Age & Youth Center director.

Following the Christmas weekend break, youth were back at Fort McCoy Dec. 27 celebrating a Hawaiian holiday. A fun day, “Wacky Wednesday,” was held Dec. 28, with youth dressing in their most mismatched clothing and enjoying fun activities, including a winter Olympics event.

Participants hit the slopes Dec. 29 to enjoy an afternoon of snow-tubing at the Fort McCoy Whitetail Ridge Ski Area.
A pajama day, complete with a New Year’s theme program, ceremony and events completed CYS Services winter camp activities Dec. 30.

Computer lab sessions and CHARACTER Counts! activities were incorporated into the schedule, as they are throughout the school year, Yahnke said.

The School of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration & Skills Unlimited program also offered youth a baby-sitting class and a cookie-baking competition.

Youth returned to school Jan. 3, and the CYS Services after-school and non-school day program resumed.
